neodymium magnets

I'm wanting to get some magnets for holding airline tubing and possibly some frag racks. I'm tired of dealing with suctions cups because they never work for longer than about a week. I figured I could get some small neodymium magnets which I imagine would hold well in place of the light duty suction cups. I'm not sure how big I would need to go with the frag rack magnets, so please chime in if you've made them before.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a local source for neodymium magnets. I wouldn't mid ordering online (after the 10th) to split shipping either. Shipping starts at like $10, which would be a killer when I'm only ordering $20 worth of stuff.

Wayne recently bought some along with the rubber tool handle dip stuff. He got them at the Tool Workshop, tho... I think there's one here at Opry Mills. I know there are a few in Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, etc. I don't think he's tried them yet, though. :)

Keep us updated on how it goes! I ended up just using MagFloats to mount my racks to, and I'm extremely happy with it as I was able to use zipties (thanks for the idea, Steve!) and they're really stable, but I'd love to see a good solid DIY rack made with neodymium.

With the price of a mag float I hesitate to use them in any kind of permanent function (although zip ties could be used and would allow me to take the racks back off. I could also probably find cheapo ones (non-floaters) that would work for the racks at a reasonable enough price to justify buying them just for that.

I need something a lot smaller for the airline clips, wire holders, thermometers, etc. I just really want to clean up the look of some of this crap I have to have running in the tank.

Is there any piece of reef equipment or potential reef equipment that Wayne doesn't have? :)

I have been using 12 MaxiJet 1200 powerheads on wavemakers for about 8 years. Every once in a while I have to replace the impeller in one. I probably use 8 to 10 a year. I've been saving the old ones and they stick togather in a bunch. I guess I have a hunk of powerhead (and other pump) magnets about the size of a softball or grapefruit. I had been thinking about seeing if I could fashion them into some kind of magnetic holder for frag racks. Before I could do that I decided to make an acrylic hang over the edge tray to try. I really liked it and made another one last week. They are about 8 x 18 inches and about 4 inches under the water. I put 108 frags on the one I made last week and I probably could get 2 or 3 more on it. Just a thought.

FWIW, Brian, I found the cheapest price for the 125s online and went to Petsmart and got then to pricematch it. I got them for $8 or $9 a piece I think. Not too terribly bad, especially considering it was local and didn't require shipping or anything. :)

They are available at several lfs. They're pretty cheap, so save on shipping for these.

Thanks, guess I'll hit the LFS in Murfreesboro this afternoon. appreciate the tip
