Hey local reefers - Any of you running an Apex controller? I am looking at getting one not because I need it per say but I do really like the pH, ORP and Salinity monitoring and logging. I am just a little leery of plugging all of my equipment into one device. My system is pretty disaster proof as it is. What to you like and what do you dislike....

Well it's been a while since I've seen your posts. I drive by your place with work often and wonder how your tank is doing. On the apex thing. I wouldn't think of running any tank without an apex or at least some form of automation error alerting etc. But the great thing is you can start with the base system and grow from there. Apex is obviously the easiest to program or setup but even so it's maybe best to start basic and grow as you learn and decide which parts and pieces you would benefit from

Hey Mark! Yeah it's been a while since I've posted. Just been lurking about. Tank is running great. I still just kind of let it do its thing. I think it is almost too clean so thinking of adding some livestock.

Which apex are you running?

I'm a huge fan of the apex, I travel a lot and it used to be very nerve wracking coming home and hoping everything was ok. With the neptune and a web cam I have alt more peace of mind.

It also helps eleviate issues I decided to start using some filter floss between my refugium and return it was fine for a couple weeks but then I stirred up the fuge to remove some detritus. I removed one pad and replaced it and planned on doing it again but forgot. As a result it clogged and water flow slowed down this caused my ato to pump more water in the tank. Luckily I caught is when I saw my salinity drop from 35 to 34.5. I was at work so I used the apex to turn the ato off and called my fiancé to remove the filter pad.

It's situations like this that can crash a tank and I feel just this instance alone is worth the expense of the apex.

By the way I'm another northern Ohio reefer

I used an apex and it does make life easier. I love feed control, monitoring of parameters, being able to make adjustments to the pumps, lights, heaters, and whatnot. I would love to get the newest model but it is pretty expensive. I am waiting for them to become more common in the for sale section.

I had an apex lite, and upgraded to the apex2016 almost a year ago. Like others, on the fly monitoring, and email/text alerts are great. Leak sensors, optical/float sensor monitoring are also life savers heaven forbid something happens. Being able to tie outlets together via programming is great too in case something happens, ex: my return pump takes a crap, water rises in my simp and triggers a sensor, I'm notified of "high sump", in the mean time my skimmer is programmed to switch off automatically so it doesn't overflow. That's just a basic example.

I also have my mixing station tied in. Mix pump, power head, heaters, temp sensor.

I will be a lifelong Apex user.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I will pull the trigger on one in a couple weeks. I'll post back and let you know how it goes.

Not that is needed but if you want some initial help let me or another local reefer you trust know and I'm sure someone can help get you started. Or do like most of us did and research documentation, forums and YouTube videos. Lol
