Neptune's Garden in Batavia

I go in there just about every time I go to Batavia. The owners are nice. They have many things other than aquaria, including reptiles, kittens, puppies, birds, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc. Back to the fish...They have a very large room and a half filled with freshwater aquaria and another 12 or so tanks dedicated to saltwater. Of those, half are likely to be empty or with only 1 fish. I have seen as many as 20 species and as few as 2, just depending on how long since their last order. Nothing special and not particularly fancy. Pretty much bare bones. Fish are generally healthy as far as one can see and the prices are about the same as every one else.

Hope this helps.

In my opinion the shop isn't nearly as good as it used to be. Selection has decreased considerably in the saltwater. They used to have a full frag tank, last time I was there they had perhaps 5 frags for sale, and of questionable price. For freshwater they have great selection. Its not bad for a passing stop, but I wouldn't make a trip of it. I was hoping that their saltwater section would take off since Batavia is closer for me than Rochester, but it just didn't happen.

Sometimes they get a Great shipment in!
Often not.. :(

It's a nice little old family style pet store (not a lot of them left)
It's a mixed pet store.
The building is old and dirty in some spots.
But the animals are most often healthy and cared for properly.
Fish are usually very good quality.

They like the Marine hobby. But with everything else they do running an all around pet store.. it's hard to do. The owner (and I've been a customer for 30 years) has told me it's too expensive to do much with the Corals. So, they often don't have any. They do get a small but nice selection of Marine fish & other invertabrates.

Long standing customers can get special orders from them. He has an affinity for rare and special Giant size fish. Rare Cichlids, Freshwater Arapaima and Marine Nurse Sharks have been sold there. Like once or twice a year. But they won't do it for most people as tank size is definitely important.

If it's not out of your way, it's an "ok" stop. Once in a while there is even a couple nice rare marine fish.
I would just call Neptunes ahead though and see when & if they are getting a saltwater shipment in during the week you plan on going to your Buffalo trip. If so, you could stop in on the way. If they are not getting one, then it's not worth it and don't bother. You'd be disapointed in that case.

:)One highlight I could add is: This coming up Saturday 11/15/2012 is their annual customer appreciation Christmas/Holiday party.
They have some specials/sale on some in store stuff... But if nothing else- the highlight is FREE FOOD. Plenty of it.
ALL Day long. Ordered and Homemade stuff. Chili, Pizza, Meatballs, sandwhichs, cookies, cupcakes, cake, more and Drinks. All Free for customers. :)

(last year '11 for the same party they also had a wildlife rehab expert present and exotic reptile show . Don't know if they they'll have it again this year)
