Never drill your skimmer cup for a drain

Yeah,

You guessed it. Even though I had the right arbor drill and tools, materials, etc., I cracked the heck out of my skimmer cup. It looks nasty.

Lots of big cracks and a giant hole. So much for DIY.

I am such an idiot. Might post pictures if I can stop crying....

Anyone have an RS 5-3 skimmer cup? RS 5-2, 5-3, or the RS 80 fit I believe. Just need it for a week or so.... or a skimmer I could borrow for a bit...

Wow, where did you drill it? I reinforced the area of my cup with some 1/4" acrylic before I drilled it just to be safe.

Should have done the same I guess, even had the arbor bit, drilled a small pilot hole, etc.

Now I am looking for a collection cup! LOL

I know its too late but why did you use an arbor bit and not a hole saw? I'm assuming the cup was acrylic. I've never heard of anyone using an arbor bit for that purpose

I meant arbor, not arbor bit. I did use a hole saw, complete with pilot drill. Just when the teeth brokw through I must have been pressing a bit or something, because it cracked the cup.

I have learned my lesson. Even when it is something you have done hundreds of times before, you can still make mistakes.

Even though there's a bunch of cracks in it, I would apply some weldon to them before I replacing the cup. It's not a pressure vessel by any means, and it doesn't have to look pretty to hold skimmate. Just my 2 bits.

Super glue, and silicone works Great.. I dropped my G5 lid over a year ago.. Looks like crap but still works..

Exactly my point, and I think you'll be shocked at the price of a new cup.

Oh I already know the price, or knew the price. I did the silicone and glue route. Looks like hell, but holds water.

The only place I could find a replacement cup was of course Euro-Reef... the price was $80!!!
