New 100gal Reef setup

day 4

day 4

turned on the actinics last night.

I have the lights about 9 1/2" above the tank. I think I'll be lowering them. what does everyone think? is there a rule of thumb on wattage vs height? I have access to a light meter - not water proof though.

had to move the skimmer this morning. I could not adjust the water
level in the skimmer because it was sitting in too much water.

reeftankpicsday4skimmermove002.jpg

Note: I wanted to use the center chamber for a Fuge. what do you think about using the left chamber? I like the filter sock - but maybe i can get a smaller one, throw some live rock in there, and some macro algae. can i skim after a fuge? should I be even using a sock? or maybe i can still use the center chamber and build a riser for the skimmer...? I'll wait on some input first I think

what about mking a shelf for the skimmer to sit on in the first chamber? that way you can still use the 2nd chamber for a fuge...

thats what I was thinking. Looks like I only need like 4-5 inches. from where the skimmer is sitting now I have 6.5 inches in clearance to the top of the cabinet

Just installed: just got my magnet holders from marinedepot.com. ordered them yesterday and got them this morning.

here is a couple of videos of the water movement.

day 5

I fired up the dual 250w galaxy ballast and 10k Ushio HQI bulbs. I thought the 10k would be too yellow, but with the actinics the 10k the light seems somewhat natural. maybe I'll try a 14.5k next bulb change.

Note: I've been playing around with the 7095 Multicontroller. trying to make a good wave simulation program for my tank. I had to move the pumps because i was getting too much sand flying around, I'll move them around and keep experimenting to see if i can get the flow i like.

here is a close up pic of some live rock with the 10k's fired up.

just got my ATO system. it is the Reef Fanatic Level controller. it comes with two float switches and a controller. the controller can operate in several different configurations. I chose the high level / low level config.

for the pump I got an Aqua Lifter AW-20 and the pre-filter they recommend. the whole system works great.

Note: The tank temperature rose to 80deg F today - I set my chiller to 78deg F. I did have my heater turned to 79deg F. I am going to set the heater to 75-76 and have the chiller come on at 79. I think the new lighting is really heating up the water.

I also found it impossible to keep the skimmer adjusted properly in the middle chamber. this is because of the changing water levels. I am going to build a shelf for the skimmer and stick it in the left chamber. and get my fuge going in the middle chamber.

Where did you get your auto top off system at...and where are you storing the topp off water?

Looks great! Lights seem real nice.

got the ATO from marine depot. 100 bucks. the AW-20 was $15. not sure where i'll store the RO water yet. maybe just in the 5 gallon jugs i transport it in. haven't got my RO/DI unit yet. as soon as i get the RO unit, I think I will use the same principal to fill up the jug, but with an actuator on the supply line to the RO.

today I decided to fire up my various ph meters. they don't all work that accurately, most are off by .1-.3 points. But, for the most part, thats ok i guess. I have 5 ph meters, 1 one worked well, 2 worked ok, and 2 wouldn't calibrate correctly.

pictured is the 3 that worked. the green meter is an okaton eco tester 2. the blue meter is a Nutradip trimeter (ph, ec, temp), and the third is my calcium reactor ph controller from American Marine.

Note: I added a small fan to the cabinet because the chiller was kicking out some hot air and it needed some air movement.

Note: I am having some real trouble getting my Euro-Reef skimmer to work. I know it mostly has to do with the changing water levels. Im going to read the Euro-Reef club thread, maybe I can find some answers there.

day 8

day 8

today I noticed that my return line finally stopped bubbling. must have some coating of the pipes going on.

reeftankpicsday8returnlinenobubbles.jpg

Note: The Ph of the water rose slightly today. the meter readings showed 7.8, 8.0, and 8.1. one meter remained unchanged at 7.8.

Note: The 1/4 HP chiller I have may be undersized for the amount of water I have in the system now. I have been able to keep the water temp from going over 78, but It will not cool the water below 74. we'll see how this works on hot days. this last week has been warm though (like summer weather). I hope I dont have to run the chiller alot during the winter. These lights seem to put off alot of heat.

day 9

day 9

today I noticed some rapid algae growth on my live rock. looks like most of the coralline algae looks to be mostly bleached out today.

reeftankpicsday9newalgaegrowth002.jpg

So I decided to pull out my poly reactor and fill it with some RowaPhos. but I was missing the valve on the power head included with the reactor. I have to get one tomorrow

reeftankpicsday9viaaquapolyreactor.jpg

Note: Today I turned the chiller temp to 79 d. I noticed that the tank temp was never getting hotter than 78 deg. its almost 10hrs since the lights have been on, and the chiller hasn't kicked on once yet. the sump seems to stay a couple of deg warmer. the heater was turned back to 73 deg.

day 10

day 10

still no poly reactor installed. haven't got a chance to make it to the LFS. more algae growth on the rocks today. hopefully I'll get that reactor installed today - and get some more live rock.

reeftankpicsday10morealgaegrowth004.jpg

Note: I am getting about 2 Gal / Day evaporation. Ph seems to fluctuate between 8.1 and 8.0. temps are around 75d at night and 79d peak during the last part of the light cycle. chiller barely kicks on now. chiller comes on maybe 4-5 times for 3 min intervals.

day 11

day 11

today has even more algae growth starting to see some hair algae on the live rock.
