I am looking at switching my 120 freshwater to a saltwater tank and would like to have an eel (I really want a stingray, but the tank is too small) I would like to have about half of the tank open in some way (either side, or down the middle with rock on the sides). My questions would be:
1. can I have the open space with eels?
2. any suggestions on the eel itself (looking for color and personality)
3. what other fish are compatible. I love puffers, and would also like to have a dwarf lionfish.

tank is 72x24x28 i think

Make sure you have a tight fitting lid. Very important or your eel will jump out. As long as your eel has a place to hide you can have as much open space as you want. Lion fish are fine with eels. Basically any fish that wont fit into its mouth.

you would be fine with an eel, a puffer and the lion. I had a snowflake and a zebra and they never bothered each other. You can have open space, but make sure that you have enough hiding places for the eel. They like to stay behind the rocks and out of sight.

Just wanted to let you know that if those dimensions are correct you have around 209 gallons. A standard 120 is 48 x 24 x 24.

I'd get either a lion or a puffer, because the puffer may end up picking at the lions fins and harassing him, usually to death. I'd suggest a snoflake eel if you have a true 120g tank.
