New 125 On The Block - Watch The Process! *Pictures Inside*

TJ

I am planning a basement sump myself right now. How is the Barracuda? Are you satified with the flow?

That's a lot of work in a short amount of time. Slow down and be patient. You don't need to rush anything in this hobby. In fact the anamials you are keeping demand that you don't. It looks like you are doing a great job, just slow down and enjoy it :)

BryanJ: So far I am very happy with the Barraccuda. Very quiet pump. In hindsight, I might have gone one more step up in size because of the amount of head....just to have a little more flow :)

Reefez: Yes, I've put a lot of work into this...but it's spanned over a year and a half. And I'm just now starting to enjoy the benefits of being able to have SPS. I don't think I'm rushing anything at this point...just loading up on some livestock! :P

I am going with the wahoo due to the size of the return line and energy effiecency. When I called Sequence they recommended the the hammerhead and then wavered between it and the baracuda. How many feet of head do you have?

Well, it sits on the floor of my basement, which gives it about 9 ft, plus another 3~4ft upstairs, so arount 12~13ft total head.

any t's or elbows in that 13 ft? I am thinking I need to call them and ask their opinion regarding the wahoo or the marlin and which would be better. With what you told me they were right on with the hammerhead. I thought it would have been overkill to use that pump.

Below is a picture of the output on the pump. After that giant "Y", it's a straight shot upstairs. There are 2 elbows in order to make the 180 degree turn to get up and over the tank side. I also put a eductor on each output to increase flow. I'm very happy with the pump, but I should've gotten the next size up.

Thanks for your help with this. I searched for 3 weeks to find someone with your experience and equipment. Your tank looks great.

For anyone that is still following this thread, the posts here will be few and faaaar between from now on. The reason?
Something BIG is on the horizon. Might want to watch the large reef tank forum (wink, wink) ;)

Wow, I can't believe it's been 7 months since I posted on my thread! Well, here's an update:

With all the time and $$$ I've invested in this tank, I just can't seem to get SPS to make it. Something just isn't right for them in my system...so I'm giving up on SPS.

My LPS (anchor, open brain, fungi plate, hammer, favites) do great! Isn't that odd?

So, I've decided to make the tank an LPS/Softie tank. My large tank that I mentioned earlier, has been put on hold for various reasons.

So, anyone have any suggestions on this type of mixed reef? I've seen it done before, so I know I can try. Hopefully my large SPS dominated tank isn't too far down the road...

Can you figure any reason the SPS aren't making it? That's really odd.

It's been so long since I've read this thread I don't even remember what type of lighting you have.

How about a run through again. :)

Thanks for showing up, Thrlride! :)

My lights are 3 x 250w 14k DE MH (Maristar system), with supplimental Actinics.

I've tried everything! BB, SSB, Zeo...I added Calc reactor, pH controller, chiller, skimmer...on, and on and on... It's not even the $$ I've lost, it's the animals. Yeah, I'm one of those reefers that actually think of these things for what they are: living animals.

At this point, I'm going to stick with stuff that I know survives in my tank. I'll be starting a new, large system, with much more education. This way I'll be able to get it right from the start!

I can't think of anything you did wrong for these guys not to survive. It's very weird indeed.

I love a mixed reef though. Some nice zoanthids with torches, hammers and frogspawns. Add in some blasto's, scolymias, fungia, and some micromussa would be a stunning tank.

Throw in about 5 clams varying from deresas to croceas would be nice too.

I'm sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with the 125. :(

Yeah, I'm hoping that a wide variety of softies & LPS & zoos, etc will give a nice look in such a large tank. Wish I could find other memebers tanks like this...

FWIW, I tested the tank 2 days ago, and here are the params:
P04: .02 (Hanna colorometer)
Trates/Trites: 0
Calcium: 390
pH: 8.0
Temp: 78.1
Alk 3.25meq/L

Again, I wish I knew what my problem is...well, at least my reefing problems... ;)

Is there anything odd with the plumbing design causing stagnent water? We had a local with a 210 that had that problem and his SPS died until he redid it.

Has the rock been used in a tank of yours before?

No stagnent water...the drains are straight pipes into the basement sump/fuge, and the returns go straight back up.

The rock was brand new from Reefermadness.

*sigh* Oh well...at least the new softies appear to be doing well.
