New 220 Build Planning - Lights?

I've got a new 220 gallon and I need to start planning on my lights.

The tank is a 72x26x26 with an open top, which I plan on building a custom canopy for once I figure out the lighting.

Speaking of lighting, it seems that there is a large number of options available, and the DIY LED stuff looks very interesting. We're planning on having mostly soft corals and maybe a few hard ones, but mostly fish and invertibrates. It seems most people are building the LED's to try to squeeze as much light into the tank as possible.

I was thinking that instead of having a 72" strip of lights hanging right above the water that I could do 1 or 2 smaller strips of lights (LEDs) which are about 12" or so above the water surface and can spread out a bit before hitting the inhabitants.

Anyone have experience with this? Will have have really ugly shadows across everything in the tank?

Thanks
