New 350 Corner Pentagon in the works

This tank has actually been in the works for about four months. This tank will be a softie/fish tank. I already have a 450 reef (mostly sps) tank, but the fish are getting big and I wanted to do a fish only tank. While planning, I thought about what types of fish I wanted to put in the tank and came to the conclusion that this might work as a softie tank. I will be transferring over quite a few fish from my 450 and only adding two or three new fish to the 350.

Tank description: Corner Pentagon 60"x60" with 18" wings and a 60" viewing panel. Overflow in back Corner about 25" long with one 2" and two 1.5" bulkheads in the overflow. The tank was made by James at Envision Acrylics with 3/4" acrylic. The top is also drilled at the front corners and to each side of the overflow for the returns and/or a closed loop.

Stand/Canopy: This is the long pole in the tent, so to speak as it is the only thing I do not have yet. Chris Crow is building the stand out of Maple. From the pictures, looks very sturdy. The top is actually a lattice work frame covered on top and bottom by Birch plywood (a torsion box) This is supported by 1" Baltic Birch Plywood on the sides with a bulkhead running down the middle directly under the tank parallel to the front. This thing is a beast according to Chris and the pics.

Sump: Custom made by Bob Porter at www.reefmania.com with multiple partitions to reduce bubbles.

Skimmer: Bubble King 250 Internal

Pump: Sequence Barracuda - Might have to throttle it back a bit, but that's OK.

Other flow - I am waiting to see how the flow is with the Barracuda, but I have planned for closed loop or in-tank flow (Tunze, Polario, etc.)

I also have a 6' long 65 watt UV from Emperor Aquatics that I might use. I haven't decided yet.

Lighting: I am planning on lighting this tank with two 250watt SE metal halides using Icecap e-ballasts (already had them) and Lumenarc reflectors. That might be a stretch. If I don't like how that sets up, I also have two 440watt ARO ballasts with 4-bulb VHO harnesses and three 2' reflectors.

I also have the Reef Ceramic panels to cover the back sides and overflow. The way these fit will leave two 4"-5" spaces in the back corners on either side of the overflow. These gaps will be filled by live rock, but also provide perfect areas for Tunzes, or perhaps a polario pump(if it's ever available). Other than the reef ceramic panels, there will be a center Island of live rock with an arch or two going between the island and the panels.

I am planning on using a 3" sand bed as well.

OK, let's see if I still remember how to post pics.

No less than delighted to see you back here. It was far too long and too big of a loss to go on without around here. Welcomed back!!!

Thanks Alberto, it's nice to ber back. The folks over on the Zeo forum have known this tank was coming for months. The only thing holding me back is the furniture. It's taken far longer than expected dur to unforeseen circumstances that were neither my nor the builder's fault. Believe me, I want to see this thing up and running as well. This 6'x6'x4' crate has been sitting in the middle of my garage for three months.....:(

The stand is not far from done, but I haven't heard from the builder for two weeks. The good thing is (if there is a good thing) that I have not paid a dime for it yet. I offerred him a deposit, but he wouldn't take it. He got transferred unexpectantly and is having to commute 6-7 hours each way every Sunday and Friday. Anyway, I am optimistic and expect an update this weekend sometime. I am hoping to have the stand and canopy by the middle to end of September. Wish me luck. At some point I'll have to say forget it and have KEEPERZ make me a steel stand and skin it myself. That means I'd have to buy my own tools. I just keep telling myself that I have no deadlines, I'm not in a rush and good things come to those who wait.

hey Mike-good to see your tank build on this
site also, let me know if you need a hand. Just
got my reef ceramic overflow cover panels and
1000lbs of dry/bleached pukani rock for the 700-
could you shoot me a pm on how you suggest I
cure the reef ceramics-thanks, Joe

Joe - sent you a PM as requested. I love the reef ceramics. Where did you get the Pukani? Let me know if you got any real good shapes/show pieces.

Mike

Just a quick update.

I finally got to the point where couldn't take the non-response via e-mail any more and I called to get the status report, not only on the stand/canopy, but the builders transfer/move. I talked with his wife (who is as nice as anyone I have ever talked to over the phone) and she confirmed what I thought. They are smack-dab in the middle of their move.

She also said the first coat of stain had been applied (which means all the construction is done) and that it looks beautiful. She admitted to not being too computer literate, or she would have taken some pics.

The bad thing is that I am not sure how or when he is going to get around to finishing it since he will be moving this weekend and he does not have the room yet in his new location to finish it. I have the sneaking suspision that he will be working on it between loading the truck with boxes and driving back and forth.

I am thinking another month before I get the stuff, at least.:(
