New 36 gal bowfront tank journal

Activity around the tank

Activity around the tank

A few things happened this afternoon.. The tiger goby was spotted darting around in the rocks.. There's a clicking/popping noise.. Usually 1-3 clicks at a time.. Guessing we have a pistol shrimp? And the purple sea urchin chewed up one of the pink tunicates!

Day 15

Day 15

Temp went up from yesterday afternoon at 26.3C to 27.3C. How alarmed should I be? Difference might possibly be due to heat generated from turning on the skimmer? Do I need to invest in a cooler? I have read that 79 - low 80's is ok..

Put a box fan blowing on the tank....cooler the better....79-80 is too high...

All moving equipment will generate heat. Power heads, pumps, lights, etc. My 14G nano always runs between 79 and 82. That is with LED lightning, minimal pumps, and a house that stays at 72.

Put a fan on like Richard says and it will help a lot. I wouldn't be super alarmed at 79 to 80 though.

Something happened Fri, 10/28. Sigh. We had to remove the live rock, pretty much take down the tank because the table it was sitting on was no longer level from water damage.. anyway. We thought the goby got transferred somehow inside the rock. Turns out he fell out and landed on the floor w/o anyone noticing. Must have been there for at least 15 min before I saw him.. he looked completely dead. I put him in a bucket and he just lay there. kinda floated around. Half an hour later or so went to go pick him up in my hand to um, flush him.. and he twitched! I left him in the bucket with a powerhead turned on.. overnite & put him back in the tank on sat afternoon. Been trying to feed him some frozen mysis shrimp.. haven't seen him yet. No idea if he's still alive or dead...? Hoping for the best.. seems like he's a survivor!!

Today we got a good look at the sea slug/nudibranch that has been laying it's eggs all over.. now there's more eggs on the wall of the tank as well! This is the first time it's come out of hiding...

Here's an updated pic of the tank.. we lost the valentini puffer.. but recently added 'Domino', our beautiful Venustus Angel. Got him on the 28th. He is feeding on the live rock, sponges and on frozen food prep. He looks happy and is constantly zipping in and out of the crevices in the live rock. Hard to get a pic of him in the tank as he's constantly moving.. but here's one from the night I got him.

It's been six months - since the new set up of a tank with Tampa Bay's live rock.. I wanted to write an update - the tank has been awesome! I've only had two fish pass away - a valentini puffer and the goby that came with the liverock (he fell out of the tank). Other than that - things have been extremely stable and I credit that to the great live rock Richard provides us with!

Currently in the tank are two clownfish, a beautiful venustus angel (we've had him for almost 5 months now), a hawkfish, goby, sea urchin, rose anemone and decorator crab.... pictures to be posted soon!

Tank is looking great, good job. I had a 36 gal bowfront for my first saltwater tank when I lived in CA, I loved it. I turned it around and had the flat side out front, gave the tank a lot more depth when you looked into it.
