New 40 breeder

This is my first time with saltwater although I have owned multiple freshwater tanks over the years. My 40 breeder has 40lbs of live rock and 40lbs of rock. When I purchased the tank from Craigslist there was already 20lbs of rock, a fire shrimp, and two mushrooms. Currently I'm waiting for my tank to cycle while I hope the shrimp doesn't die.

The stand is not yet complete, I'm planing on finishing it when I get a sump in the future.

Here I rearranged it!

There is something in the software that blocks what it assumes is spam. If a new person tries posting picture and depending on what they say it shows a new thread but has nothing in it. I've found quite a few of these. A mod will come along and view the content and fix it.

Hey question for you, the name Bogue Chitto are you from Louisiana by chance?

I am not, I'm in Virginia

No, I'm from Mississippi.

I got my first batch of coral from a local reefer on Saturday. I'm going for a softy and lps tank with a few sps.

I'm starting to think about fish selection now and I'm not quite sure on what to get. This is my current list, is this too much for a 40breeder?
A pair of clowns
A juvenile yellowed eye tang
A long noes hawkfish
A blenny or a mandarin goby
Two banggai Cardinalfish

No tangs in a 40. Even a juvenile needs swimming room, and really should have a minimum of 75 gallons. I would also wait on a mandarin. A blenny should be ok, but a Mandarin needs a very well established tank and really shouldn't be kept in anything under a 75, though some have been successful with one if they can get them eating frozen foods. The clowns are fine, the hawkfish should be fine, a blenny and two cardinalfish will be fine, but I'd limit it to those. That is probably pushing it a bit as it is. Do you have a sump?

I don't have a sump yet, but I'm putting one in for Christmas. I already have a pod explosion and when I clean the class it is completely covered again in a few hours. And could I substitute a flame angle for the tang?

If you plan on doing coral in the future, I wouldn't. Some people have had luck, but then they can snap one day and start eating coral. If you don't plan on coral, they are a beautiful addition and should do fine in a 40. That being said, I would probably remove one or two fish from your remaining list if you do add a flame angel to the list.

ill second not getting a kole tang... I had one in my 40 that killed off most of my algae eaters... was a beautiful fish that looked good but after killing 2 gobies and my blenny, it was time for him to go... in my 40 I have a pair of darwin clowns, 1 chromis, bicolor blenny, diamond goby, mccoskers wrasse, solon wrasse, and a long finned fairy wrasse. Id recommend going with a couple wrasses as I was iffy on them at first but now I love having them in the tank... they are good looking fish that are very active and not aggressive... My mccoskers nips at my fairy wrasse from time to time when he gets hungry but other than that for as stocked as my tank is, it is rather peaceful...

I have the same sized tank and I got 3 chromis. For some reason although they are peaceful they will violently attack each other. Be careful and watch them. I'm just waiting to pull this big guy out hes a bully but hasn't done any real harm yet.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Update:
It's been a good while since I updated on this forum so I just wanted to let everyone know how the tank is going. Still no sump plumed but I'm planing on getting another 40b to drill and switch everything over. I did finish the stand minus the trim around the top.

I have added quiet a few new corals and a few more fish, I'm moving rather slow since it is my first tank. I only have 1 chromis left, I have a midas blenny, and a perc pair.
