Ok so I had a 20g fowlr tank for a while which due to a tragic accident with an overly energetic dog is no longer with us. I recently got a 75g tank that I would like to continue where I left off and make a reef tank. My question is what are some things that you all think make a successful tank and what are some things that you suggest to stay away from? Now don't get me wrong I've been doing research for a while so I'm not like ooooh I have a tank let's make it a reef tank!! It's just you are the ones with the experience and you know what works and what's not all it's hyped up to be. Any tips are appreciated. thanks

oh and for those who would say the first tip is get rid of the dog...it's already done! lol

First the basics: Sump, skimmer, reactors for GFO and carbon.

What kind of coral do you want to keep; sps, lps, soft?

well from what I've read and heard there are soft corals that are easier and more forgiving to beginners to start with. So I figured I would start there and work my way up from there. I'd rather not just buy a coral cause I think it looks nice and bring it home and kill it from inadequate lighting and feeding.

Is the tank drilled ? definitely suggest a refugium of some kind. Base your corals on the type of lights you end up with= VHO , T5 , or Halides.
