So with all of the breeding crap that my brain is surrounded by, I decided to go to Petco and check out their selection. Lets see: They had a pair of Tomato clowns for $30, ocellaris were $15 each, and oh, whats this? Maroon clowns for $16 each? So I bought 2 maroon clowns (there were about 7 of them in a 10 gallon tank). The female is completely misbanded, and the male only has one misband (on his back stripe on the right side). So I acclimated them using a drip line, and then put them into my 10 gallon temporarily (until I find a 20+ gallon that will fit the dimensions required). They are right next to each other and are "dancing" in circles on the bottom of the tank. Maybe the salinity is low, I will check right now. Everything else is fine though.

mine were the same size if not smaller, and they came down with brook, and i went to fw dip them and they died.....i dipped them for 2-3 seconds and saw that they were leaning and laying on the bottom of tupperware container so i pulled them and put them back into display and they were heavy breathing and not moving and just floating....keep your eye on them i had them for about 2 weeks then the broke out with it. WATCH THEM SUPER CAREFULLY. mine were 32 each which is alot more than yours but canada is stupid and alot of things are more expensive than others
 
The male is 2.5" long and the female is 2.75" long. What is Brook? After turning on the lights over the 10 gallon, they started to swim around and check out their new home. I put a faux anemone in there as a house warming gift ;). I am glad that I went to Petco today and got these little guys for $16 each. And the guy that worked there, just before putting a rubber band around the bag, put 2 squirts of "water conditioner" in the bag that the fish were already in. I asked him what that was about, and he said "Oh...that there is water conditioner." So I asked him why he conditioned the water. His response: "Oh...that conditions the water for the fish." I asked him if it would make the fish sleepy, or to make the trip home kinda blurred, and he did not answer! So I am kinda hoping for the best...
 
mine were tiny alot smaller than that 3/4 inch to an inch long...

brookynella also known as clownfish disease....keep an eye out for it looks like ish but big patches and its fluffy kinda like a fungus growing on them also mine got fin rot from it too
 
have no idea didnt ask the lfs where they were from i think they were local though but i could be wrong...they were really nice :(
 
Okay...here is a very nice thing to hear/see. So I was browsing away at ORA's website, and started reading about their Maroon Clownfish, which is what I just bought. It said that [ORA] only breeds GSM clowns. I thought that was impossible, considering that mine have white stripes. So I kept reading, and it sayed that they ship out their maroons when they are between 6/7 months old, and that they start to get the gold in their stripes between the ages of 9/12 months old! So I actually have GSMs!!! I am so happy. Just thought that I would share that with everybody :)
 
I'm pretty sure that PETCO does get their fish from ORA. Who was your source Steve? That's the opposite of everything I've seen and read...
 
If your going to try and breed these in a couple of years just be aware maroons have some of the smallest fry of clowns. They require the small strain of rots for the first part of their lives.
 
Do not worry. Before I wont even THINK about raising their fry until I am experienced enough with ocellaris. BTW... Clownfishes, by JDW is by far the coolest/most helpful book that I have ever read! She just wasn't clear on one thing though...how many tanks total do I need to raise the larva of one pair? Can a broodstock tank be ~28 gallons and the only filteration be a Fluval 4 in-tank filter (or two)? I actually came up with the great idea of putting all of the tanks in my closet (on the left side, pictures later). So I can make a really easy stand out of 2x4s and plywood.

Well, when I was in their last (when I got these two maroons) there was a big sign that said that "All of PETCO's Clownfish are tank-raised from ORA (Oceans, Reefs, and Aquariums)." If you would like a picture of that sign, I can ride my bike 4 miles for you.

they get all their tank raised livestock from ORA they are ORAs biggest client.
 
that's sad that ORA is willing to seel to them, considering a huge chunk of the fishes get sick and die soon after being placed in Petco's care...
 
It is all about the money. They sell them to PETCO, and if (more like when) they die, PETCO needs to buy more, raising ORA's profit. I wonder how much money ORA makes every year just from clownfish.
 
^^ depends largely on the store. most of the clowns at PETCO do very well actually, I've seen comparable loses at many LFSs. I treat all my fish with prazipro and cupramine (at least the ones that aren't copper sensitive) and have a very low loss rate and the vast majority of my customers are repeat that are very happy.

And yes, all PETCOs clowns come from ORA. as do all our tank raised dottybacks, bangais, clams, corals, etc.

^ the water conditioner thing is "PETCO policy" to be honest it doesn't do a thing and is supposed to be just the freshwater. I threw the bottle away. If people buy fish that have just come in (ie right out of the shipping bag) I'll add a few drops or prazipro to kill off any externals flukes they come in with on the ride home but thats it.
