I just bought a rebel xti and have been playing around with it. Here are a few pics ive taken with it. Please tell me what you think and what could make them better, all are taken with stock lense. Im about to order a tamron 18-250 and also the canon 50mm

nice photo's phatstanley02.

I dont think the monochrome works for the first image. nice texture, but everything else is a bit flat grey

always ensure that when you shoot animals, that you get their eyes in focus. the pic of the cat would be alot stonger that way. i like this photo alot

good shot of the rose with the droplets. i think the rose at the back is too distracting. a better angle/background would have been better and a nice tight crop on the rose itself

Hope this helps

Oh my GOD! Those are AMAZING pictures PhatStanley02. Wow. Now I want a Digital Rebel. Why did you get the XTi vs. the XSi?

thanks bdepp, ill try those things. Im finding it kinda difficult to get the focus etc where i want it with this lense and hoping ill be able to take better control with a better lense. Even at AF 16 I couldnt get both flowers in focus, but im still learning.

Los I just couldnt afford the XSi, but luckily I get a great employee discount so I was able to get a service plan and some extras with the camera

full size crop of the rose, it loses some clarity at a 100% zoom. Is that because im too shaky without a tripod?[/IMG]

Its because you are using an 18-55. Settings, composition, and everything else seems to be great. This is about as good as it will get. If you want better 100% crops, your need to look into better lenses and/or a 5D ect. You have maximized the output of your equipment (in my opinion). You will go far with this.

tomorrow i am ordering a tamron 18-250 because i get a rediculous discount through work (only pay 279). when i get that lense im gonna sell the stock 18-55 for the canon 50mm. Any thoughts on those lense choices?

I'm not a fan of very large focal range "super zooms". That said I consider the 18-250 to be one of the better of the bunch and it will save you from switching lenses all the time. You sacrifice quality for convenience though. I would recommend a 70-200 f/4. It is one of the highest quality zooms around weighing in under $600. That said I own the $2000 70-200 f/2.8 IS version. Lots of money for far superior low light performance (very important to me). If you have enough light to shoot at f/4 without IS, the f/4 version is nothing short of spectacular though. The 50mm is a good choice. I had the f/1.8 and later trashed it for the f/1.4 which I prefer by a very wide margin. The f/1.8 takes good sharp pictures, but its so cheap I felt like it was just going to fall apart in my hands. It doesn't take moisture, dust, drops, or any harsh treatment you could name well. I feel much more secure carrying the f/1.4 without worrying about ruining it every time I use it. Aside from just being cheap, the glass is high quality and the pictures it delivers are what I consider the most bang for your buck available.

i'm not a fan of those super zooms either. i couldn't justify the $2000 for the canon 70-200 2.8 IS, so i got the sigma 70-200 f2.8 which is a brilliant lens which i got for $1000. half the price and very comparable results. this lens however doesn't have the IS. great lens though

the 50mm 1.8 is a standard. i think every photographer has had or has one in their bag. cheap and brilliant results!

nice imput, but the real question is there a better lense than the tamron 18-250 in the $300 and under price range. I have access to this lense at half retail price (and a few other tamrons).

also keep in mind that im not doing reef photography, i dont currently have a tank up and running... But i am really into macro photography

if your going to do macro photography, i'd get the Tamron 90mm macro lens instead. i dont think your going to get good macro shots with a super zoom lens. but that lens would be a good "walk around" lens on a budget.
