New camera...feedback

I finally got a chance to really play around with my new (new to me) camera today.

This is my first DSLR, so I'm trying to get everything figured out, and I'd love some feedback from the pros.

Overall, the picture is too dark, but the sand seems really bright.

The picture was taken with a Canon 10d with EF 28-80mm lens.

Photo was cropped, and levels were adjusted in PS.

Man...I need more frags, and more growth. :D

Generally speaking, your lens will be at its sharpest around f/8. You should also avoid going higher than around f/13, unless you have a specific need, as it negatively impacts image sharpness from diffraction.

There's no need to be at f/20 for that shot.
