New camera question about lens

Hello I just purchased a nikon d3100 and have a chance to pick up this Micro-NIKKOR 105mm 2.8 AI-S lens for $300. Would this be a good macro lens for tanks pics and what do you look for when buying a used lens? Is there a better lens in this price range I should be looking for? Thank you!

I believe that is the older nikkor micro. it is a dynomite lens! It doesnt have auto focus tho and your d3100 doesnt either, so it will be a 100% manual focus lens. If you can live with that, Id say its worth it if in good condition. Plus, if/when you upgrade your camera body to one with an autofocus motor, the lens will be that much better.

Yes it will work. You'll just have to get used to focusing it.
