im setting up a clam tank i got the tank light and stand as a package the tank is 40lx18tx20w it has a 250 w double ended pendant with an hqi ballest what should i do as far as substrate - dsb -bare bottom also how much flow should i go for i might want to keep a few sps later on any input suggestion would be helpful

One pendant or two? I don't think that one would cover a 40" long tank. For flow I'd go for 10 to 15X turn over if you don't want any excess powerheads although more is better What kind of filtration are you planning on? I think a fuge along with a dsb would be the best, but be sure not to use calurpa because it could spead like a plague to the main tank. Try using Chaeto instead.
