just got this guy today and placed him midway in the tank. i wondered how long it will take him to attach to the rock he's on? i'm worried that something will knock him down before he's stable.

The clam you have is a Derasa. His byssal thread are too weak to hold him. It will just rip off if he attached when the fall over. These clams are best place on the sand bed.

i got this clam yesterday and i was told it was a squamosa. they also told me to put it midway up in my tank. now i'm worried about where he is sitting. should i see what happenes or go ahead and put him on bottom ?

You were told wrong. he is not a Squamosa. How much light do you have on your tank? This Derasa can grow very fast in good condition. it is the second largest Tridacna species. It doesn't require lots of light but still need bright light.

i have 260 watts of pc lighting over my tank right now. they also told me he would be ok under this lighting so long as i keep my water in good condition and keep my calcium levels up. there is a pic in my gallery of the tank that shows where the clam is positioned. not a very good pic , but i think you can see it . i'm pretty new to this so your input is helping. hopefully i can keep the clam, but i want it to do good.

Put your Derasa on a secure piece of rock (large enought so he won't fall over) close to the light (upper 1/2 of your tank). He should do OK.

The clam is a blue rim Derasa like this one in my tank it was 3" long you can see it now after four years:lol:
