New Clown?

ok... my GF's sister wants a new clown (specifically MY 2 maroon clowns :rolleye1: )...since the last one died from Brook and LLE plus who knows what else... im scared that the disease might still be in the tank in some form or another.... the tank (17 gallon cube) only has 1 yellow tang, that was in there while the sick clown was... and 1 GBTA... would you suggest that the tank be treated for what might be left over from the clown? or might it be ok to re-introduce? the Yellow Tang that was in there w/ the clown is showing NO signs of sickness or stress and is and has been eating very actively... just seems to miss his old buddy a bit :(....

so should we wait and treat the tank for...whatever...? or does it sound safe?

thanks again RC,
Cris

thanks again FireRock...i will inform the owner and im assuming that the tang needs to be moved to a QT tank for a total of 4 weeks is this correct? and IF SO... even though the Tang is not showing any signs of Brook... should i still treat the fish w/ Formalin or shouldi wait and monitor the fish carefully during the QT time while the Brook dies off....ALSO, i have 1 question about QT tanks in general... since there is a MAJOR lack of Bacteria in a freshly set up tank with nothing to cycle in or out... doesen't that cause harm to the fish?

I just realized she has a yellow tang in a 17 gallon tank. That is WAY too small for a tang. How many livestocks are in that tank? Perhaps heavy bioload also contributed to the unfortunate events you have encountered lately.

doubt it... the only things in the tank were the clown and the tang... about 1 week prior to RAP and bringing home the smaller Clarkii that died soon after, i did a complete overhall on the 17 Cube... included a VERY GOOD sand rinsing w/ salt water (about 5 gall.) until there were traces of any discoloration from fecies left in the water... and the rinse was COMPLETELY clear... before i placed the fish back into the tank...the tank sat running for 2 hours then i tested for ammo. nitrate, nitrite...showing ZERO on all tests...then i placed the fish back into the tank...about 1.5 weeks after the tank overhall the larger clown caught Brook. (3 days after the smaller one died from it) ... but the reason why i did the overhall in the first place IS because i was thinking the same as you... 2 larger fish in the 17 gall... really needs a good sand cleaning.... im sure you can tell which one is b4 and after :)

but im still wondering...should i treat a Tang for Brook even IF he is showing no signs of the disease?...

and also since there is a MAJOR lack of Bacteria in a freshly set up tank with nothing to cycle in or out... doesen't that cause harm to the fish sitting for 4 weeks in a QT tank?

nope - i've had fish in extended quarantine (7 months, yes, that is months) with absolutely no biofilter. i laugh when people talk about "new tank syndrome" - just make sure the fish is comfortable - appropriate sized QT tank for that species of fish, fake coral, fake plant, pvc, etc. keep plenty of premixed water on hand and watch water quality. half the battle is keeping the fish in as stress-free an environment as possible.

thank you NanoLurker... that was a concern i had to get past...

next up...
should i treat a Tang for Brook even IF he is showing no signs of the disease?...

Tangs rarely get Brook. I wouldnt treat it for anything. Just feed a variety of foods to keep the tangs immune system kickin.

Tangs can surpass ich once they have it just with good feeding;)

cool...good to know... since i dont have to worry about the tang catching the Brook... should i still QT the tang out of the main system (display) and hope the Brook dinospours die off on there own... or should i just go ahead and keep a clown out of the system for about 4-5 weeks WITHOUT moving the tang our...(?)
