New clowns and Rittori

Picked up a mated pair of clowns (turned in to the LFS by another reef keeper getting out of the hobby - I got to purchase them from the LFS though)

Also got a Ritteri Anenome from another reefkeeper (he had it for over a year and did not want it anymore).

My tank is a 180gallon. Nitrites are pretty high, but I have a BM200 skimmer on it, about 200# of live rock and a 6x5' ATI T5 light fixture. Anemone is about 10" under the water on the rock work near the center of the tank. Tank has been up and running for quite a few years. (as a matter of fact, I have had the 3 tangs in the tank for over 3 years)

Here is a quick video of the anemone and the clowns. Turn the audio down unless you want to hear my daughter commentate her game of minecraft she was playing at the time..... :uhoh3:

Minecraft.. LOL... Yeah.. my kids play it too.. from the 10yo to one of the 19 yo.

OK.. SO...

Personally I would move one of those power heads so it flows about 3" over the head of the Ritteri. That will provide some turbulent flow, but no directly at it. If it comes from the left (from that camera view) it will be less likely to move down and toward the flow, It will move up and stretch out some.

Knock those Nitrities down some, as I assume you are already working on.

Watch those tangs, they might end up as dinner.. LOL... I have lost one already to mine.

What are some of the other variables?

pH
Temp
Other inhabitants
mg
phosphates
light cycle/timing
natural light
amount of time playing minecraft
salinity
feeding

What do you plan on feeding it and how often?

I will follow up with another short video better showing the rockwork and distance from the back wall. (powerhead is blasting into a rock behind the anemone and then over the top of the rock and Anemone.) I am certainly willing to change it, but I would like you to have the best info I can give you to ensure I understand how you would recommend it changing.

For the Tank Parameters you asked about - all the testing I will do tonight to give you the most accurate and up to date info, but here is the rest of it for now:
pH - ~8.3
Temp - heaters kick on at 76, fans kick on at 79. It does not rise above about 79.2 in the summer. Winter can drop to about 75 though.
Other inhabitants -

  • [*]Sailfin Tang
    [*]Purple Tang
    [*]Powder Blue Tang
    [*]Foxface
[*]blue Damsel (have had forever and while annoying, not worth chasing to get rid of)
[*]Pair of diamond gobies. (one is quite a bit larger than the other - purchased at the same time over a year ago and they pal around together all the time. may be a pair, maybe just friends, not sure.)
    [*]Six Line Wrasse
[*]male Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse
[*]Few Mushrooms - (nothing spectacular though)
[*]a few crabs (including one giant hermit crab that I can only think showed up among the small red or blue legged hermits at some time or another. has been there for years and he is huge now)
    [*]Various Snails.

mg - will measure tonight
phosphates - Will measure tonight
light cycle/timing - 10 hours - lights are replaced yearly in the ATI fixture.
natural light - indirect. (Tank is in the entryway of my home)

amount of time playing minecraft - way to much
salinity - 1.024
feeding - feed the fish nightly and pretty heavy (we have 3 other tanks as well - get a mixture of Rods food normal - Rods food herbivore - Mysis shrimp - Brine Shrimp) plan to spot feed 1 or 2 krill a couple of times per week to the Ritteri. Last nights feeding, the Anenome did not eat though - and the sailfin ate the krill as soon as it left the anemone. Will try again in a day or so.

One of the things I forgot to mention for this tank. My goals for the tank are it introduce more motion and color to the tank. Any recommendations you can make for fish or inverts would be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Michael

Very nice.

I can not help you with color, I like blue and reds.

With the video just let it sit one the anemone for like 2 minutes. This will give it a nice overall view. Youtube is the best place to upload it for the size and speed of d/l for others.

Thanks for the update. I'll wait for the video.

What happened at 2:22??

That swarm of bubbles that came across. That was interesting. I thought you fed them at first.

I do like the flow. Can you 'cross streams' with another PH above it? Just wondering. Do not want you to re-adjust everything.

The reason I ask is the crossing of flow of two PH will cause turblent water where they meet. It will cause catoic flow over it.

As it stands, though, it looks like it is real happy. So changing flow may not be needed, until it starts to move. I find that adjusting flow over it, causes it to stop the movement and wait to see if it likes it or not.

How was chorus? I have a 10yo, so sometimes I end up putting music over it, in youtube post editing. Not that anyone would mind the conversation, but "Have you fed the cats yet?" or "What did you do to make your brother upset?" are funny, but not for the internet. LOL

Is a light cycle of 10-11 hours long enough in your opinion? I have a wave timer in my reefkeeper, but do not have the powerheads to run it right now. (standard Korillia's will not stand up to the rapid on/off sequencing) I hope to get 2 of them this winter to play with.

Thank you for the suggestion of post processing audio in YouTube. I was not aware that was an available option. Both video's are being modified now... :)

Awwww.... LOL

I agree on the korilla and timing. That is one thing that sold me on the MP40's I have. Short cycling is bad on some things, along with the jarring effect it would have on it.

Even cycling at 10 second intervals would be good, but that is still too short.

Look at what I did by crosing the streams:

Around 3:00 there is even a dead stop where it just floats verticale.
