New construction - tank room advice

Why don't you put it in the wall? You will have more room in the main room. install all the A/V equipment in the wall "fush mounted" with a smoked glass door and or install it in the back room "away from the humidity" with a remote IR emiter and blaster so all you see is the flat screen. and in wall or tower speakers.

Do you mean the tank? Although I love the "Picture frame" look of in-wall tanks with one viewable side, I also love to look at my tank from the ends. So I decided to do a three sided in-wall.

Putting it flush in the wall won't really give me any usable space. The room is 19 feet wide at that point so I have plenty of space for other things.

I think having the three sided look will really make the tank look nice and it's one of the reasons I want to go with a tank exactly like Stupid's - three feet deep.

I like your idea for the AV equipment. Home Theater is one of my other interests and the fish room area was originally going to be a dedicated projector/movie room - but I sacrificed that idea for reefkeeping (how's that for dedication to the hobby).

So now the tank will share the room with a much simpler and informal "home theater." But I may try your closet idea for the equipment.

Here's a different view of the basement showing how the tank doesn't take out much usable room and is accessible from the back.

Think you might try to put a trap door on the canopy part of the wall for feeding and the such?

I like to watch my fish eat, so I enjoy standing in front of the tank when I do that.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, that's one of the things I haven't figured out yet - what the finished wall will look like. I suppose it will have to be finished in wood with some doors in front. I'm just like you, I like to watch the fish eat.

I know I've seen a couple SLASH threads where you big tank guys have put some amazing woodwork around the tank. If anyone remembers some links please post them.

By the way, if any of you guys are planning a tank room or even trying to design a sump or plumbing, you should check out Google SketchUp. It's a free google download and is a great design tool. I plan on using it to design my plumbing.

Yeah, I've already got mine drawn up on Google SketchUp Pro.

The best things about pro are Sandbox Tools, creating walkthrough's in avi files, and.......that's it I guess. Pro is actually approved for Commercial use.

It's fun to play with though.

Ok mpcart, I know your doing something over there, so I revived this thread. What-cha got?? Any new pics to post?? Don't let this guy fool you, he's building a monster tank system in his basement and from what I've read a one-of-a-kind three sided viewable in wall tank!! Now that's going to be SWEET!! :D

I got nuthin' right now. . . .

I'm still in the planning stages and I won't be ordering the tank for a while . . . . famous last words!

I've got my old tank set up in the basement . I'm going to plumb it and a 75 gallon frag tank into a stock tank that's in the tank room.

Next, I'm going to purchase my obscenely large skimmer (probably this week). I'll probably put it in the equipment room but I'm also thinking about building a display stand and putting it in the viewing room. I'll have to run that one by the wife first.

Here is the old tank occupying the space where the new one will go.

and here is the tank room. All of the stuff in it is aquarium doo-dads - including the two sets of MH that I bought and don't know what to do with.

It will be a slow process but I hope to have everything up and running by Christmas. In the meantime I'll just live vicariously through Stupid's project. Keep those pictures coming!

Oh, I also bought a dehumidifier that you can see in the above picture near the brute can. I'll see how it works in the tank room. Right now I'm using it to get the moisture out of the basement.

Hey Mike, What do you mean you don't know what to do with the MH's?? Are you changing your mind on using them are did you mean you don't know how to set them up with the new system??

Please let me know how the dehumidifier works out. I'm going to need to do something like that too. I just don't know which/what to do about it right now.

I'm still leaning towards MH with Lumenarc reflectors on the new tank. I got a little crazy and bought a couple used 175W MH setups in the past couple months that I won't use on the new tank. Maybe I'll put a set on the frag tank.

Oh ok. I "was" going to go with 3 of the 250 watt MH's on the 225 system and then supplement with VHO's, But that was before I finally seen a tank with T5's in person which was your's. My thought was to go with the 2 outside bulbs at 14k and the middle one being 10k. I never went into much of a thought on it though as I seen your tank before I really started planning to much.

How big of a skimmer are you looking to get?

I am looking at maybe getting a new one if I can pry some of our wedding gift money from the wife. She says we need new cookware and knives. I already supplemented that with my plan of returning everything we got from target and she would have enough for what she wants. I am looking to dig into the cash proceeds.
