New coral frags...help with ID of each (photos)

Hello fellow forum members

I have recently undertaken a project to start a reef while I wait out the required time period from a complete wipe out of my tank due to Velvet.:( Funny, the only fish that survived the outbreak was a firefish goby, and the inverts. I have no idea how the goby fought off the attack, but he did.

Anyway, back to the subject line. I am going to upload photos of 14 frags that I purchased. I could REALLY use some help in IDing them, and opinions on their health. They are very new to the tank...4 days old.

Water params:

0 Ammonia
0 Nitrites
0 Nitates
460 Ca
14 dKH
.5 Phos
8.2 pH
Temp 78 deg F
SG 1.025

Here are the photos of the frags:

Please scroll through the images using #'s 1 through 14 for reference in your replies.

Thanks for your help! Let me know if you have any trouble with the images.:o

1) Hammer coral (looks pretty bleached)
2) maybe a favia??? looks like it's covered in aiptasia and the pic is really blurry :/
3) bleached/Dead SPS (also very blurry)
4) Birdsnest
5) another favia i think
6) montipora
7) very angry zoas
8) encrusting monti?? very blurry again...
9) dead favia
10) not sure, kinda looks like candy cane?
11) this one just looks like a blank frag plug...
12) favia again??
13) Xenia
14) cup coral

im not very sure on most of these, especially the ones I said favia for...

Sorry to say but most of these frags look very upset or dying, could you give us more info on your system? lighting, flow, etc. and send a full tank shot, looks like you are struggling with a bit of an algae issue.

hope this helps :)

The cup corals will need fed.. they are non photosynthetic... I feed mine... kinda alot lol

They look amazing once they are happy.. and when they get fat with dozens of tenticals.. they prefer a more shaded or completely shaded spot

And they are SUPER hardy as well

Thank you for your response. I will post a photo of the entire tank asap.

My lighting consists of two LED fixtures both identical. They have 3 settings...1. full on (around 7500K average), each with 60 7500K, 5 Actinic, 4 green and 4 red LEDs positioned about 4" above the water, 2. actinic only (10 LEDs total), or 3. completely off.

Questions, please:

1. Hammer coral...this is the one that resembles a brain coral, right? (To me anyway). Too much light? Should it have more color? What colors? It is completely white with a plug covered in purple coralline.

2. "Maybe a favia". This was one of the first corals to open when I got them. When closed up, the polyps are teal green/aqua colored especially under actinics. It opens ever day, but the teal color disappears except on the very tips...the rest of the polyps on it down from the tips is brownish. I don't detect any atypsia, but that's my lack of knowledge.

3. That is a tiny coral that glows yellow and blue under actinics...otherwise it is white with bluish tips under full lighting.

4. Birdsnest.. I assume you are referring to the coral with the leopard like spots with branches. The tips of the yellow branches have a purpleish tone and the leopard part glows yellow under actinic light, with bluish tips. It seems to be doing well.

5. "Another favia I think". I assume this is an LPS species? It has not opened at all since I got it, but has a nice pinkish color and the centers of the polyps have started to get some yellow dots around them. Center and dots around the center glow yellow under actinics.

6. "Monipora". I assume you are referring to the pink disk with ruffled edges with a hole in the center exposing the plug.

7. "Very angry zoas". This coral has deep purple cones and extends 2 or 3 polyps under full light with neon green tops. What makes you say it is angry?

8. "encrusting monti??". This coral is peach colored and hasn't shown anything at all yet. Glows pinkish under actinics.

9. "dead favia". Completely brown and looks sort of like a mushroom. It does have some signs of life in the center of the polyp, but hasn't done much.

10. "kinda looks like candy cane". Very pink and extends yellow polyps after lights out. I thought it might be a Duncan, but maybe not.

11. "this one just looks like a blank frag plug". It's not, lol. It just looks that way because of my bad photography and it is a side view. It has a pink base and center. It showed signs of life yesterday, extending short greenish/gray polyps, but has since closed up. It glows yellow under actinics.

12. "favia again??". Yes, but a different one. Are these LPS corals? It has shown no signs of activity, but glows under actinic light. Are LPS slow to open and acclimate?

13. "Xenia". Very white and pulses all day under full lighting. Kinda gets dormant at night.

14. "cup coral". Beige colored with green dots. Hasn't shown anything yet.

Thanks for your opinions and analysis! Hope to hear comments!

Not sure where the pics are, but clicking the link brings me to photobucket with a bunch of screenshots of your desktop.

I only see one pic of a severely bleached hammer coral.

Thats all I see too..

I never understand why/how people buy corals without knowing what they are or what their care requirements are,etc...

Agreed 100%. I can see purchasing a coral and forgetting the specific name when you get home, been there done that. But the general type of coral I always know.

You have to go to photobucket from the link he sent then click on his username and go to the "œrecently uploaded" tab. They're all there.
