New Elos system mini owner; first timer!

I just bought a new Elos system mini over the weekend and will be in the process this week of getting things setup and running.

I have some questions on how much rock, what fish etc to run in this 20G setup.

I do want 2 clown fish as my 2 kids just love nemo. I was also thinking about a wazzle and cardinal fish. Is this tank large enough to support these 4 fish? I will also get a cleaning crew to consisting of a shrimp and a some crabs. Could you also put a small star fish in as well?

How often should I run my lights? I plan on having SPS and LPS as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I have never had a reef tank of any kind.

Wrasse will jump unless you cover the tank, which would be a shame for such a beautiful Elos tank.

All I will say, is with the kind of money I think you spent on that system, you owe it to yourself to research the hobby more and do it right before you put a drop of water in the tank. Read a book... The Reef Aquarium Vol 3 is ridiculously comprehensive and quality, but a heavy read. The Conciencious Marine Aquarist is a bit dated and less in depth, but still a quality book especially for a beginner.

JMO, good luck.

(For what it's worth, I think you made a damn sexy purchase on the tank ;) )

Jandree - Thanks for the info on the books; the vol3 appears to be a very comprehensive book and very recently published. I have done a fair amount of reading on this forum and a few others about 6-8 months ago when I originally wanted to purchase my first setup but I waited as I could not make up my mind on what tank, etc I wanted. Then I saw and heard about Elos and decided thats what I wanted. I have an idea of what I want to do but was looking to hear what other 20G folks have done and to share some success and failures as well.

I did search on the forum and found somethings but not a whole lot of info regarding 20G setups. I will keep searching and will also purchase that book you recommended.

I think its sexy as well!! Looks great sitting in my den!!

Hi

I did most of my research on Nanoforum on 20 or smaller tanks. There are tons of info on nano there.

Elos is a great system.

Okay, good to hear. Didn’t mean any disrespect or anything, rather just making sure you’re getting off on the right foot in this awesome hobby ;)

Karlyhui - thanks I will go over there and read up and see what I come up with.

Jandree - LOL, its all good. I didn't take anything you said as being disrespectful but just helping me out like you said. I am very excited about getting this going.

Check out the ELOS forum under the sponsor forums there are some great build threads in there and any ELOS specific questions can also be answered there.

Do your research and take things slows as things can get out of hand quickly when you go to fast.

Lights depend on livestock and preference. I run my 120 lights 9.5 hours a day and my nano 12 hours a day.

Reef Secrets and the Contienctious (sp?) Marine Aquarist are great books to read cover to cover for a good grasp on the basics. There is also a page under the faqs about starting a tank and of course the forums.

Good Luck and welcome to the hobby

Is this the book mentioned earler? http://www.amazon.com/Reef-Aquarium...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217884342&sr=1-2
Yep... expensive, thick, and heavy. But worth every penny and then some. I've lurked around reef message boards for years, but I'm still constantly learning new stuff from that book. It's very readable, but yet also very detailed and technical. Probably my best spent money in the hobby.

K, I'll get off my soapbox now. :)

A question and I think I know the answer. I have just put the sump etc in the stand and I have alot of extra tubing for the overflow piping and the waterflow corregated tubing. I am assuming I should cut both pieces to "fit" correctly so they is minimal slack, correct?

I would think Elos would have everything cut and ready for you. There must be a reason for the extra. Hopefully an Elos owner will reply soon for you.
