I've just set it up and it's not skimming very well. I'm using a Rio 3100. When I first set it up with the outflow valve wide open it flooded out of the unit. So I added a ball valve from the pump to throttle it down.

The instructions are a little ambiguous when they say to set the water level at 1/2" below the interior platform and in the next paragraph they say don't set the water level higher than 1" above the platform??? I want the foam to be thick, dark stuff.

I currently have the ball valve from the pump about 22 degrees, with the outlet valve wide open. This combination has the water level about even with the foam tower.

Is there some majic setting for the water level

As an owner..I'll chime in. First off, I would run your pump full tilt. Then, open the skimmer's gate valve all the way, then close it slowly so the water level is just below the platform. (Mine runs best about 1/8" below the platform, and my gate valve is closed just over 1/2 turn from wide open). Also, keep the gate valve above the water line, not beneith. If your water level is too high to do this, make a little stand for the skimmer. Lastly, your EV-180 will have a break in period. This can range from a few hours to a couple of weeks, depending on your system and the amount of oils on the skimmer when it arrives. (You may have noticed a slick feeling to the skimmer when unboxed). Give it some time, and it will do a fine job. That's been my experience.

As for the remark about letting the water go 1" above the platform. This will cause very wet skimate than can overflow the cup.

I talked with Aqua-c and they now reccommend the level to be about a 1/2 inch up into the riser tube rather than 1/2 inch below the internal platform. I concur on the breakin period. There is one. Also, keep that riser tube clean.
