New fairy wrasse

Big and Evil
Can any of you ID it? I picked it up from the Ark. I feel like a crook it was only $20 and it is over 5 inches long.

I saw that one yesterday. Nice fish. Can't help with the ID though.

Is it my imagination, or are wrasses coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden? It seems that everyone suddenly has bunches of them.

two questions. What did the ark say and do you think it is at adult colors. Also, dont feel like a crook there are only a few wrasse that are out there that cost a lot( like a leapord wrasse) but there a tons that look like a million bucks.

I would agree with pescadero. depending on the type of tank you have reef or fish only especially for wrasse, they dont get very big and they are always moving

Some of the inexpensive wrasses do look like a million bucks. I remember seeing a 6-inch lunar wrasse at the Ark a couple of months ago. It was an outstanding specimen, and they only wanted $30 for it. I just didn't have the space to house it.

After stopping by the Ark on Friday, I stopped by Petco. Petco had THREE lunar wrasses in the tanks. 3-4 inches. $15 each. Wow, that was cheap, but I still don't have the right tank to house one. IIRC the lunare grow up to be pretty big. One of them would be a nice addition to a big FO tank.

The Ark said that somebody had dropped it off and that they didnt pay anything for it. I am pretty sure it is at adult colors as it is about 5 inches long and most fairy wrasses are at adult color by that size. Also it seems that its color are faded from being at the store, or maybe from its previous home, becuase I can see faint markings that have colored up already after feeding the tank tonight. I have gotten a few different suggestions as to its type, but the one I have gotten the most is lineatus which fosters and smith sells for $230 each online. I am willing to wait a few weeks for its true colors to show before I decide what it is based on pics of other wrasses.

Did you quarantine that guy, or did you just add him to the reef?

If someone just dropped that guy off at the Ark and they just dumped him into their display tank, that means that they didn't take any efforts to quarantine any of their livestock from an outside source.

FWIW, my fish that came from the Ark are in hypoQT.

I have never QTd a fish. I know alot of people will tell me I am crazy, but I make sure I give the once over looking to see if it seems healthy and they I buy it. The Ark does run copper in thier FO tanks so that helps, but I know I am playing with fire.

I was in there today and am thinking about buying the dying lobo that they have on clearance and see if I can save it. It's just so hard to tell what color it's supposed to be under their lights. I might go back tomorrow and try to see how low they'll go on it.

yeah, their lights are kinda funny. do you know what kind of lights they're using in the FO tanks? i wonder if they've got some sort of non-reef type of color enhancing bulbs there, as i've seen some fish change color after coming out of their tanks.

i was telling Shawn earlier today (thanks for stopping by!) that i tried to save a yellow tang that wasn't doing well under someone else's husbandry. he ended up having something nasty and killed off more than half of my stock. i had to break down the tanks and start over. now i've implemented a rigorous quarantine system. we'll see how that works out.

yeah, I know I should be more careful, but I try to make a habit of only buying fat healthy fish, and most of the time I only buy from Exotic Aquatics in highland, they give all thier fish fresh water dips before putting them into thier systems and before bagging them up to send them home. They also run anti-fluke and copper in the FO tanks most of the time. For what it is worth the wrasse is fat and healthy and is eating flake food with gusto. The only thing wrong with it is a frayed fin where my coral beauty nipped it the same night I put it in.

so both the Ark and Exotic use copper and/or antiparasitic meds in their FO tanks full time? is that something that most LFS do as a routine measure, or is that something that's unique to those shops? if you know any details about how they do things i'd love to hear more about them.

as a side note, i was reading in a clownfish book that clowns shouldn't be treated with copper, as it stops them from spawning, either temporarily or permanently.

FWIW, i've done the FW dip followed by hypoQT, thinking that i'd spare my jeuvinile clowns from copper in the hopes of someday they'd form a mating pair. the bigger two have started to pair up, excluding the smallest one from most of their activities. the biggest one is becoming protective of her mate. it would be a shame if they turned out to be sterile because they were treated with copper. the two newest clowns are really deep red colored. they appear to be the deep red strain that comes from the hatchery in Puerto Rico. those are kind of hard to find.

oh, forgot to ask -- i remember when i was at your house that you'd just picked up a new foxface rabbit. how's he doing?

It was a golden rabbit and it is doing great. Always one of the first to come up for food, and it has colored up alot since I brought it home. Another fish that the Ark had marked down because it was ugly due to faded colors.
