new fish proceedure double check

Ron Popeil

Love them clownfish.
hey guys, its been a long time since ive brought in any new fish worth quarantining. tomorrow i should have four small a. nigripes clowns arriving at my house.

i have a 20 gallon tank set up, with an additional 50 gallons of freshly mixed water on hand for the next several days.

my thoughts are an initial 50 minute formalin dip in approximately 2 gallons of water at about 20 drops per gallon of formalin.

from there, acclimation into the 20 gallon QT tank at 78 degrees and 1.018 salinity.

coppersafe and perhaps some maracyn in the QT tank.

and then.....water changes and close attention to the fish for the next week or two.

any other thoughts? suggestions?

as always, thank you.

only suggestion i have is to look at the fish first and see if there are any obvious reasons to medicate the fish... if not, skip the medication and just qt in hypo to observe.. then if signs show up you can medicate...

give them plenty of cover, real scaredy cats
the Pair I had arrived with brook so formalin is the most important I think. A dip being the best way to go

I also whould skip the other meds and just watch them in hypo qt.
They will no doubt have internal parasites, so a wormer may be good in the food.
I add garlic juice that comes out of grated garlic (I add alot about 2 or 3 drops of pure esscence per feeding of brine or shimp mix and vitamins.

This seems to clear up stringy poo in a day or two. This is only my personal experience I have experimented and so far this has worked.

adtravels, fill me in a bit on your method of using garlic for internal parasites, im not familiar with it.

simply grate regular garlic, save the juice, and mix in a few drops during feeding?

to be honest i really got started on it with my clarks, There is no hard and fast rules as to feeding and appetite stimulants. I read in several pieces/ threads on the fish forum and in articles taht garlic can help in ridding internal parasites.
So I gave it a go just two drops in and entire batch at first (about 2 months worth of food)
I like to experiment, so I thought I would up the amount of garlic as the fish would not clear the stringy poo when I got them and i did not have accsess to a better alternative. So Now I grate the garlic one small clove and put in a spoon, i add 2 or three drops of ro/di water to the spoon and mix it with the garlic. I then squeeze the lot and let 2 or three drops of the liquid fall into about hlf a tsp of food (a homemade shrimp squid spectrum pellets and fishvits mix). I add vits (extra)and then mash it all together add a few drops of tank water let it soak for a few mins and the feed the fish via a pipette.
I have done this in a tank with softcoral, lps and various invertabrates with apparently no ill effects twice a day for about a month at the longest.

who know what it is, but it has worked with both my percs and my clarks
try less if you dont fancy such a larger amount or even with some established fish before you give it to the grips.

they dont appear to like chunks of garlic that have accidentally fallen in to the mix.

i can understand that though!

for the most part all four fish did well through acclimation and the formalin dip. it appears one of the clowns is breathing pretty heavily, and i blame this on perhaps gill damage from the formalin. they all four appear to be eating very well.

ive added an air stone and maracyn to the tank. no copper yet.
