New Fish Store in North Valley

Called Top of The Reef. I have nothing to do with this place. Im just a hobbyist like the rest of you out there. I saw the ad in the Savvy Shopper and thought that I would stop in and check it out. Just up the street from AquaTouch (so you might as well stop in and see for yourself what is all about if you have a few extra minutes and want to drive about 3 blocks). Guys there seem really nice. Only have 8 tanks and are still cycling them. So I wouldn't rush out to check it out just yet. Sand flooring with gold coins in the the sand. Kinda cool idea for kids that come in with their parents since they always want to touch everything...lol. The guys claim to fame is that they make and have a patent on synthetic live rock that they make in a "lab". Just thought Id pass the tid-bit along to fellow hobbyists and reefers (not sure if they will be getting corals or not, store is kinda small).

For anyone out there: What is the turnover/success rate of these start up stores anyway? Do you see many come and go?

If I were going to start up a specialty fish shop, I would not open up 3 blocks from the nicest store in the valley.

Sand on the floor with gold coins? I can picture a child choking on one of them. I hope that doesn't happen.

AT is of Cactus and the 51 I bleave it is 35st

I just knwo how to get there not where it is ...if that makes sense

That may be their saving grace if they are that close to eachother then when ever I go to AT I'll most certainly go to the other unless it's really not worth the 5 minute drive

It is on cave creek (24th) and sweetwater. I block or so N. of cactus and cave creek on the west side of the street.

I didn't know those areas were considered the North West Valley. Anything with Streets in the address is the east side if you ask me.

Agreed, I was excited when I saw the thread title....Thats East Valley still to me, I am almost an hour from Aqua Touch, this won't be any better. There will be a store in Surprise eventually:rolleyes:

I agree that it is definitely not Northwest Valley, but the title does say "North Valley". Cactus is pretty North, especially if you considered where most of the local fish stores are located.

It is definitely North for me.

I agree that it qualifies as North, and you're right, the OP did not say anything about West.

Personally, I'm not sure that 32nd or 40th Street counts as the East Valley. Is the Central Valley bounded by 20th Street and 20th Ave? North I-17 to AZ-51? That's a pretty narrow strip. Especially considering that Phoenix-centered Avenue numbers continue to at least 202nd Ave.

Actually, it appears that some of us don't want to acknowledge a Central Valley at all. Anything with Streets is East Valley? I guess my house on 11th Street is equivalent to Queen Creek now.

All semantics I suppose...I consider myself in "West Valley", but I am at 175th and Bell, i.e. pretty far North.....Anyway there is nothing good that I know of out West

I've lived here since 1984 anything with Streets was considered East Valley. But now that the valley is so d@mn big I would agree 32nd St is centrally located now. :)

I live up on 40th and Bell. If you go one street East it is Tatum. Which is Scottsdale. So I don't think I can live any farther East then that. LOL Phoenix is funny. In OC it was pretty much South and North. Costa Mesa is kind of the cut off.

It was hard for me to grasp how big Phoenix really is. Just because someone lives in Phoenix does not mean they are close. Heck it could be a 100 mile round trip.

Perspective does matter. People tend to center their mental maps around their own homes, so two people may sharply disagree on where "civilization" ends and "howling wilderness" begins.

As for small business failure rates, there are plenty of different statistics out there. A casual Google search turned up first year failure estimates ranging from 20% to 90%. Part of the problem is that different people use different definitions of "failure". One source defined it simply as going out of business. Another source restricted "failed businesses" to those which left debt behind, and did not count companies that closed at or above the break even point.
