if anyone can tell what kind it is i would appreciate it

thanks jim. upon further reading im starting to think its not what is pictured in my earlier post. for one thing i only paid $20 for it. i still cant really tell the difference from a McCoskers and a Carpenters. the only thing i cant tell difference wise is the price

Take a look at the dorsal fin. McCosker's have only one spike on it. Carpenters seem to have two to three spikes. It's hard to tell until the fish flash at you. I am still trying to tell what my tiny baby one is. It is hard because it is only a little over an inch long (TL) and it has not developed the spike. Since it's flashing at me, I believe it's a young male. Paracheilinus carpenteri (Carpenter) I ordered turned out to be a male P. flavianalis (Yellowfin Flasher wrasse).

How many soft dorsal rays does it have? Per fishbase.org
McCoskers "Only the first dorsal soft ray prolonged in adults"

Carpenters "2-4 dorsal soft rays prolonged (every other ray beginning with first)"

Awesome fish either way!

Jim

ahhh then its a Carpenters. also what is flashing? does it just flare out its fins or does it change colors ?

Sorry, didn't see Tomoko had already posted that info. She is a wealth of info and a fast typer too!:D

Jim

I just happened to see the post sooner than you did, Jim.

You will know when it flashes. Flashing is when it flares out his fins. He will change his colors to a dramatically different colors. When my flavianalis flashes, his dull purple lines turns into vivid neon blue lines. His body is beautiful orange adorned with bright yellow fins. He also shows bright magenta spot at the base of his single dorsal ray. He is a beautiful fish when he is not excited, but he is utterly gorgeous when he flashes.

Tomoko,

You really peaked my interest in this fish when you posted about it a few weeks ago! I have read that it can be a jumper. Have you found this to be a problem?

Jim

Well, I took a preemptive approach and covered up my tank with 1/2 inch mesh bird netting like these:

http://www.nextag.com/bird-netting/search-html

So far, so good. Having two Flasher wrasses in an open top aquarium, I was concerned about them jumping out of the tank by accident.

This material is so fine that it does not shade corals at all. Some people constructed a corral with egg crate to fit inside their canopy.

Wow, now I know why they are called "Flasher"Wrasses. Never knew that, thanks for the info. I'm in the process of setting up a 180. I have'nt gotten to the stocking list yet, but I think the wrasse family will definitly be on that list .

Tomoko,
Did you use the netting on the 120? If so, how did you mount/secure it? Looks like a good option if I can figure out how to put it above my 180. Had a flame angel leap some time back and have been looking for a good cover ever since.

Jim

Here’s the picture of my bird netting frame. It sits on the inside ledge of the upper trim where a glass top would rest on. The small cut-outs on one side are for the straps for my frag tray. I have two of them because of the center brace that all larger AGA tanks have.

HTH,

Tomoko

Awesome Tomoko, how did you secure the netting to the eggcrate? I am guessing hot glue gun? Looking at that the kind made with the fishing line like material would be a great find, I see that somewhere if I can think of where. The net is actually clear nylon fishing line. Also Tomoko would you mind sharing a pic of your frag rack with me?

I remember now it was on cast nets (fishing) I seen at Wally World. After alook they also have 3/8" holes and 1/4" in them and made of monfilament. Maybe you could just find that material cheaper without buying a net.

I bought the birdnetting at the garden section of either Lowes or Wall Mart. A lot of garden centers or feed stores have them, too. They are really cheap. The individual opening on the bird netting is more like 1/4 inch square and the filaments are lot thinner than the cast net.

As for securing, I tied them to the frame with fishing line at several places. I suppose you can glue them with hot glue gun easily.

I wish I had a black egg crate. I am going to spray paint it with Fusion paint like Buzzbait suggested.

The picture of the frag tray is in the 2nd page of my gallery.

(Sorry for the hijack Krafty)
Tomoko,
What did you use for the L Brackets to hold the tray? I was thinking of doing something like that in my display for small frags to grow out.
Thanks again,

Nitro,
its not a problem. im finding all of this helpful and also i would have never thought to ask about the netting on the top to keep fish from jumping out. im glad it was brought up. and also im thinking about doing a frag rack too now.
