Just picked up a 20 gal long tank, and 40 gal breeder from petco's 1 dollar per gallon sale. Going to build a frag tank out of the 20 gal tank. Wonering if i should use a canister filter for it or use the 40 gal breeder for a sump has anyone used a 40 gal breeder for a sump for a 20 gal tank?

if it were me, i would do it the other way around. 40g frag tank and 20l sump, but thats just me and the coral hoarder that i am

Ok so if i use the 40 gal breeder for frag tank would a 40 gal breeder be better for the sump than a 20 long? I like having the extra room in the sump and was also going to make the display bare bottom and put rock and sand in the display to help filtration?

in all reality there is no need for sand. if you stay on top of your water changes and just have rock in your sump, you will be fine. corals dont add a whole ton of bioload to your setup, its fish that are messy and add a lot of waste. and 20g sump will be fine for your 40, i know a few ppl that use 20g sump for there 55 and 75 with no issues. biggest thing is space for your protein skimmer, rock or fuge if you want one, and return pump
