New fuge results on Nitrates and Phos in my tank

funman1 is probably the number one supplier of chaeto to MARS. He's constantly giving the stuff away, which illustrates both his generosity and dedication to the hobby.

Steve, aka the Cheato King is by far one of the most generous people I have the pleasure of working with here in Sac. An exemplory model reefer and a one of the best sources for Jelly Bellys you can find (yet another personal addiction of mine). :D

hahah Mike, well it's your old broken light, that I repaired, and is now doing all the magic!!

Thanks guys!!!

Speaking of which, It's time to clean it out again..

It's crazy how you can grow that stuff so Fast! I know I'm happy to reap the rewards of your frequent cultivating! I've had the batch you gave me at the meeting last week, under constant light. I can't tell if it's growing or not yet. I'll keep you posted.

I am no macro algae expert, but has anybody seen their macro get coated with another type of algae? The cheato in my sump is a dark green, save a growing reddish coralline color on some of the sections. At first I was thinking cyano - but there is none in the tank I can find. There is a good deal of coralline growing all around the sump next to where this stuff lives, but I did not think coralline could grow on organic matter. Its almost like there is a bit of red chaeto mixed in with the good green stuff.

I have seen the cheato in my fuge get other green algae on top of it, usualy the bits that are extending from the surface, when it overgrows the fuge. I would say its hair algae. This is in a small hang on back fuge made from a Aquaclear 500, with a 7w CFL from one of those azoo tanks, though it does get light spillage from the VHO's on the tank as well.

a cheato tip. it needs pretty good water flow or it will just break into little pieces and clog everything.

low nutrients can cause the same effect as well.

Out of curiosity, should you have your refugium downstream from the filtration or upstream?
I asked my self the same and didn't know what to do so i looked to melev and he had his split in two like so

It depends on your setup. I personally love Melev's design on that Sump. Simple, but well designed. I believe he had 2 overflow pipe's coming from the display, one to the Skimmer and one to the fuge. Both the skimmer and fuge flow to the return. This way your skimmer will not "skim" off all your pods and extra goodies that your undisturbed fuge will spawn! a little extra food for the kids...
