on monday I bought a branching coral from my lfs. It had 16 heads and has a nice green color. It retracted for a day and now it's starting to come out. the problem is the heads are now brown not green. will they regain their color in time? I've heard some corals purge their zooanthelle when stressed. do you think this happened here.

could have....what lights were they under at the lfs and what lights are they under now.......how close to the top etc....this does happen from time to time but have not heard of it happening overnight......but I guess it could...but I think it's more of lighting than anything affecting the appearance from when you purchased it until you brought it home....

the coral was under flouresent lighting about 6'' from the top. I also have p.c. lighting, and I put it about the same height. I bought this coral a day after it came in. it never got to fully open in the store. nice corals go quick at my lfs. I hope the color comes back, I hate brown corals.

now was it under t5's and you have t5's? how is your flow? it might just be in shock due to 2 acclimations in such a short period of time. give it some time and make sure noone else in the tank messes with it.

I had it high in my tank with alot of flow and it didn't look good. so I moved it down to the substrate last night to a lower flow area and it's looking alot better. heads are open, about the size of quarters and nickels. but the heads are browned out. will they ever regain their green color?

My hammer did that, put it at the top of your tank after awhile with PC's,and use lower flow.
