New herbie Biocube 29 and nanobox LEDs

Hi all,

I got an itch for salt around August of 2016. September I started purchased a used biocube and went on a reading spree of salt.

Finally figured out what I wanted to do and the diy concrete wall had my attention!

Here is my build...

First, removed back wall. Drilled 2 holes for sump and return on back glass (I emailed coralife and they said nothing on the tank is tempered... plugged the drill in:artist:)

Plumbing test

Diy overflow and laid first set of concrete on the bottom (there is a process to using concrete on glass).

Glued walls on glass. Concrete prep on walls

Currently have 4 red claw hermits, 1 yellow tail damsel and 2 test corals on the BRS reef. One on each side mid level. You can kind of see little branches

I have a 10gl qt tank I started around October. Only kept hermits and emerald crabs for the first month or so. Then late nov, early dec I came across a pygmy octo and put him in the 10gl. Picked up a used nanobox mini so corals will settle in better once I transfer to BC29.

Current qt stock list...

4-5" Pygmy Octo
2" emerald crab
3" serpent star
5-10 constant red claw hermits aka food
single head Duncan
4 mushrooms
random sps coral

X2-X3 per week, reef roids and target feed Duncan once a week.

For my first dive in saltwater, I am enjoying this:bdaysmile:

High fives for research and execution, where is the octopus?

Tyvm, much appreciated.

Octo is in a 10gl qt tank. I took a quick pic of the tank right before work in hopes to catch him roaming the tank. Today is wc day so tank is a mess lol:sad1:

Heres a couple pics when I first got him. I just wish he wasn't nocturnal, so cool to watch when you catch him roaming in the early AM

I'm pretty new to all this so keep in mind I'm not second guessing you at all. I was just wondering if the nanos are enough for an octo? I thought they would want a much larger tank?

The back wall looks great BTW!!

I have read 29gls is not enough water. I might be cheating or able to get away with a sump that is an additional 12gls or so (water, not sump volume by dimensions). I don't think Octos don't need much tank space, especially Pygmys. Its the water volume and filtration that counts as they can be messy eaters. My filtration is overboard on the BC29 and I feel confident he will be just fine. Not sure how much life hes got left since I got him as an adult (read they only live 1-1.5yrs).

There is a mimic Octo near me that's fairly small, I've been itching to trade the pygmy in:hmm1:... not going to but its very tempting:lol2:

Thx, I wish I would have done the concrete to my old 300gl freshwater setup:inlove:

Update...

Got a few sps, lps and mushrooms now. Got some rock nems going into my qt tank this weekend.

My favorite coral atm is the candy cane on the left.

Glad I saw someone try this out. before I upgraded I had the idea to do the same exact thing. Remove the false wall and do a custom overflow with a sump.

Looks good, and love how well the concrete wall looks.

That setup is so sweet! How long did it take you to install the lights? I've got the large retro plus M coming this week from Nanobox.

It took me about 45 min and that was taking my time. Also I put some silicone where the wire go through the plastic cover so no water gets in. One of those "just in case" things.

Over all, I really like this light!
