New hobby - Digital Photo - Anyone else?

I have done a lot of photography for flyfishing mags and in my tank. But I don;t know much at all about the computer editing part of it.

cool. I know less than zero about photoshop etc. just jumping in .

Have you been published? Any online work I could see?

I don'tthink you will find tyoo much online. I have been pretty blessed to write for Fly Fisherman, Saltwater Flyfishing, Fly Tyer, New England Flyfishing (I think), japanese Flyfisherman. A few others. I know you did ordo the Montauk fishing scene, so I am sure you have seen the xplosion offly guys out there for hte fall run. One guy who used to pinhook with Bobby Rocchetta and has a sparkling rep among both commercial and recreational guys is a man named Ken Turco from Hampton Bays. For a decade before his apssing Ken was like a best friend / father to me. We did everything together, including fish Montauk and Shinnecock like crazy. Lots and lots of good pics between the two of them! I have a good friend, too, Adriano Mannocchia, who use dto be a professor of photography at CW Post and is, within the sporting art specialty, a pretty famous painter. He taught me a lot about photography, too:)

That said, the absolute best thing about digital pohotography is that I can scxrew up like crazy and no one knows but me:)

Jc, I have heard of them. I would love to see your stuff and learn.

Hi warren, sounds like a good idea. :) Ps you gave me bubble algae, you dirty tramp. :)

Hi Dave. All is well, but far too freaking busy.

I see you are also a diver. If you think you are addicted now, wait until you get a housing and start bringing it underwater :D

My wife and I love taking dive pictures, but film cameras were so frustrating. You need to take too many bad pics to get one good one. Between the lighting and distortion issues, surge, 7mm gloves etc, it's tough, especially up around here.

With the digital cam, we just snap away, and delete the ones we don't like. The two mediums were made for each other.

You live near a great place to practice as well. The docks and old cement rubble zones in Fort Pond Bay are a great place to take pics. There is a lot of life, good vis and it's usually pretty calm there. We can hook up for a dive there come spring if you're interested. We found a spot that no other divers know about. You can still see and photograph large lobsters and blackfish there. These are usually hunted out a popular spots. Enjoy the camera...

Oh man, I am already looking at housings. :) found a cool site - www.wetpixel.com

I can't believe how easy it is to spend money in this new "hobby"

As for my gear, I got the Nikon d200, along w/ 18-70 lens, 70-300 VR lens, and 50mm 1.8 lens.

I am really loving it. I'd love to join you diving fort pond bay!

LOL- How'd I see that coming ;)

You can also try calling Leisure Pro http://www.leisurepro.com/

They are in downtown manhattan, but also ship. They are primarily a dive gear dealer, but they have a sister company downstairs that has the best pricing on dive housings I've been able to find. The dive gear prices are insane as well!

I just sold a high end Nikon SLR film camera for like ten cents on the dollar for what I paid. We just weren't using it anymore. My digital is a point and shoot Canon A70, but I'm looking to upgrade in time for spring.....

I hope you saved the lenses!

Don't you even tell me they're interchangeable :mad2:

I need to go out for a while and bang my head against the wall....

You really don't want to know, but yes both Nikon and Cannon digital SLR's use the same lenses as their respective film bodies. It was the only way I could justify the expense of going digital, I only needed the body ;)

Oh well. Easy come, easy go. Some day I'll discover an inexpensive hobby :rolleye1:

If you do, let me know :D

So far the cheapest, or at least cost effective, hobby I've found is homebrewing. But that's only because I don't drink cheap beer :D
