sorry to jump in on your thread but I want to try a DSB for the first time and need to know if you all just dump the sand in on the glass or do you make a little platform for the sand to go on so tere is flow under the sand ?

Just add the sand on to the glass.

I work with architects designing hotels, and one thing that there notrious for is form to follow function. When actually it should be the other way around, so i suggest if you want the 20x9 fish room, then push for it, as long as the money isnt an issue. there artsie type people usually, and want things to flow and be pretty, but in reality, if you dont care, and youd rather have the room, then by all means push for it.

Agreed.. I've never used a space under the sand (Jaubert plenum), and haven't had a problem... just make sure the sand is at least 5" deep as it's important to create a no oxygen environment at the very bottom where the anerobic bacteria can do the denitrate thing.

WOW, great job in the planning!! Have you thought more about ventilation? Or will the separate room be enough to protect the rest of the house?

The current plan (thanks to J4life) is to incorporate the main house HVAC system, and have a dedicated dehumidifer which goes to the floor drain. This will add heat to the house.. which will be great in the winter.. not so good in the summer, but I'm told winter load is 3x the summer load for the average house here.

I think it was oregonreef.com where I got the idea that turning over the entire volume of air 3 times an hour is a good place to start. A quick calc puts that at ~112cfm.. which I think should be easily accomplished.

By the way, thanks to everyone for the comments.. they made last night's meeting much more productive and focused.
