I guess. A 10 dollar timer could also work. My reef budget sucks. Lighting is a low priority for me. If it makes you happy, go for it. I'd buy a controller first. You can have a tank of the month with garbage equipment. Buying new is also nice. Ecotech is great company to deal with. Maybe split the difference and buy used.
