New Local Store

I am planning to open an aquarium fish and supply store this fall in the Youngstown area. My specialty would be coral and saltwater fish but I would also carry freshwater. Let me give you a background of myself. My first name is Mike and if you ever shopped at the Niles Pet Supplies Plus for fish between 2000 and 2006, chance are pretty good you know me. I used to maintain all the aquariums at that location and have done set-ups and maintenance for many local businesses and homes. This hobby is my passion and it is time for a good store in our area. I am tired of these fly-by-night stores that have crappy suppliers and no selection of dry goods. For the longest time, I wanted to support a good LFS but they never developed. The time is now to get reefkeeping back in the Mahoning Valley!

Hey Cap. Actually, I am still doing some supplier research. I currently have 4 dry goods suppliers and 6 live suppliers so I am just about ready. One of the suppliers I wanted to use, as of December (damn it) no longer distributes to LFS, only the big chains. I have found some substitutes though that carry a large range of product. I am establishing accounts with wholesalers now and I am looking at a building on Main St in Hubbard next to St Pats church as the location.

Do you have a network of fish lovers that would frequent the store? I hope that we get some hobbyists back in this area because it sure seems it has died as of late. I appreciate the post. Stay tuned.

yea theres a few. we dont have them becuase all we have is tw pets and he doesnt carry to much in the line of saltwater. have you thought about girad ,there pretty cheap on stores and taxes

Hey Mike sounds great I have a few buddies who are into saltwater, they actually got me into it within the last few months. We go to Elmer's in PA alot it will be real nice to have a good saltwater based LFS in the area. We are looking forward to shopping at your store when it opens. Any ETA on when your planning on starting the store? Thanks

i have been trying to see if theres a intrest for a web page for us valley aquarium guys i could make us a real nice one. maybe when you get the store up you could sponsor us/ give us a meeting place. i still want to get a club going
