New Mantis 2

Heu guys,
My wife finally found me a mantis locally. He is hiding in a bunch of caleurpa right now so it is hard to get a picture of him, but here is one I managed to get.

MantisSmall.jpg

Does anyone know what species he is and how big he will get?

He is about 2 inches right now...
I will try to get some better shots later, but I would probably have to take out that caleurpa to do so... don't want to stress him out too much right now though.

Whoops, my wife was logged on...

sdm, thanks.
I don't know if this will help with the ID, but he has a spot of orangish pink on his back.... between his shoulderblades - if he had shoulders. He is still very shy, but I will be taking more pics whenever I get the opportunity

It's the meral spots and telson that matter. (In case ya don't know, meral spots are those spots on his arms-the ones in between the brown dots-and the telson is the tail-tip.)

Coloration varies with the lighting the mantis is in-color changes with each molt to the appropriate color. Yours has either been in full-spectrum lighting for a while, or has been in intense lighting for a long time.

Is it a spearer or a smasher? When I look at that pic, I fail to see any hammers, if Im correct, which I probably am not, It ought to be a P.S. Ciliata.

my ciliata has eyes like that, however, he is dark brown. but his raptoral appendages are obviously spears. but in that picture, i cant tell.

I agree with sdm. As far as the pinkish orange spot on the back, if it's really apparent and contrasting the rest of the shell I'd wager it's shell disease.

I got a good look at him yesterday, he is definitely a smasher. As for the spot on his back, I will hope for the best - it did appear to be symmetrical, so maybe it is just his markings.
Hopefully he will start getting more comfortable with his new home so I can get a better look - and some pictures.
