New Mantis setup advice

I want to setup a Mantis tank. What is the "hot" setup. My LFS said that I need at least 30 Gal to accommodate the shrimp when it gets bigger. You guys tell me what to get and I will do it. can you pet more that 1 shrimp in a tank at one time? Also is there any fish that would survive?

Thanks

LOL....I guess I should proof my post a little better.....

Wow that made me smile :)

I think I will leave it there so that everyone else can get a good laugh.

30g is only necessary for the largest specimens (ie. peacock). No, species cannot cohabitate. Although I have seen it last for a little while, but one was hiding constantly.

As long as the fish does not try to sleep in the mantis burrow, it can work (in my limited experience). I had a clarkii clown with a 4" G. ternatensis with no problem. A friend of mine has a striped cardinalfish with his big peacock, they get along famously.

So much depends on the species - what kind did you have in mind?

I haven't decided on the species yet, but I think I'm going to try to get a peacock Odontodactylus scyllarus, but that's not set in stone. Any suggestions?

As for lighting is there any recommendations? or special requirements? I would assume that the only special requirements are for the live rock, but I could be wrong.

no special requirement for the mantis and lighting. I have tried 6 species so far (all for a short time, I am still quite new at this), and as far as gregariousness goes - the peacock is probably number one, they also have size and beauty. My favorite though is the Gonodactylaceus ternatensis, they have the beauty, the size (max of only 4", but it is a thick 4"), and seem to be more aggressive in terms of hunting and rock breaking for home building.

My pics aren't labeled very well, but if you look in my gallery you can see some various photos of mantises.

Why...

Why...

Why do you like G. ternatensis so much? I am only asking because it seems I will be getting one shortly (small guy). Here is my set up fot it:

10 gallon All-Glass tank
Two AquaClear Mini filters
One AquaClear 300 filter
100 watt Titanium heater
Digital thermo
28 watt 50/50 compacts
1/2 lunar light
live sand and live rock

What do you think?

no, the second and third one are not G. ternatensis, I do not know what kind they are. The first looks close, but not close enough to say yes.

You...

You...

You sure? I do not mean to question you, but how do you know? What are they then?
