New Media for Mud Filters.

hi, i was pondering ideas for a convenient compact nitrate filter, needless to say i came up with nothing. unless someone wants to share with me a cost effective way to remove oxygen from high flowing water withing a few inch compartment.
anyway, it got me thinking about using foam to cultivate anaerobic bacteria, and i thought id get some opinions from here.

i want to make it clear that im not saying that foam is in anyway superior to mud. in addition to being an ideal environment for both aerobic ans anaerobic bacteria, mud also cultivates plankton and microfauna that foam never could, at least not in any kind of comparable way. there is also the lack of an enriched carbon source such as mixing peat into the mud or substrate media. however, there would still be available carbon from accumulated silth and fish waste.

so basically, i think the pros would be that it is significantly cheaper and easier to work with, and the cons are that it would be significantly less effective and lack several benefits added from mud.

i would love to hear some opinions on this.
