Hi, am new to the forum, having kept tropical fish for some time, i am thinking about getting a marine setup.
Have read that the best way to go is to use a deep sand bed, possibly in a sump and not the main tank, due to the possible build up of heavy metals requiring replacement of the media every 5 years.
Does anyone have experience of using a DSB for longer than 5 years without any problems and how to avoid any build up of heavy metals (toxins) in the sand bed (deep or shallow)

I don't test for heavy metals but my DSB has been setup for over 10 years now. It's up to your taste and goals whether or not you'd like to use a deep or shallow sand bed. There's no "best" way to go about setting up a saltwater tank even though you'll get lots of suggestions. :) Read as much as you can and check out the stickies above. ;)
