Hello, new member to the group here. Just setup a 55gal FOWLR, I stupidly put some fish in before the tank was done cycling. About half through now with ammonia finally low but nitrites still spiked. Crossing my fingers.

Also starting to cycle a 35gal that is either going to be another aggressive FOWLR or an octopus tank. Undecided. Going to be purchasing a protein skimmer for my 55gal in the next week or two. There is currently a foxface rabbitfish, blue chin trigger, copperband butterfly in there. Just found some copepods in there two days ago! Also needing about another 30-40 lbs of liverock and would love to find a place cheaper than petco at $7.50/lb.

If you plan on doing an octopus tank, PLAN, they say octopus' are for advanced people so I would definitly hold off on the octo, an agressive tank would be much better for a "newbi"

Just my opinion

Appreciate it, yeah I've been reading up on them quite a bit over at tonmo.com. I planned on holding off a bit anyway, need to let the tank sit for another few weeks anyway.

Do you have a sump? I would definitely get some plants in there, will help alot. Tell us about your set up as far as lights, filters, pumps, and so on. I can ship you some cheato to get you started if you need. Best bet is get online and find a florida live rock seller who can next day it to the airport for you. Reefrocks.com is a good place for porous rock, but it is not seeded. a 50-50 mix is a good start.

As far as lights I just have your basic cheap 2 fluorescent(didn't buy tank as a "saltwater tank", rather a normal cheaper 55gal. For filters I just have a Whisper 60 and a Rio600 for water movement. I would like to setup a sump but haven't fully understood how they work. I may have to look at reefrocks.com. I just spend roughly $700 getting the tank setup and that strapped me for a short time so thinking in the next week or two to fully stock up on rock.

I would love a few more details on how to setup a sump!

They arent too bad. If you are at all handy you can make one out of acrylic. This site is great for that. http://www.melevsreef.com/ I started out with a corallife VHO light. You can pick them up on ebay reasonable. Biggest mistake new people make is over feeding and poluting their tanks.

Just my thoughts from someone who killed their fair share of fish starting out.
