Hello everyone,

I am very new to the reefing hobby, my buddy just gave me his 20 gallon reef set up and I am loving it so far. I tried to do a search on the best way to upgrade to a larger tank the most efficient way possible and being new I guess it won't allow me to search IDK... Anyway I hope this hasn't been asked too much in the past but I'm looking to upgrade from a 20g to a 55-60g tank. What is the best way to do this? i don't plan on upgrading to a new sump or anything else and they are obviously needed for the existing tank. What are the recommendations for this type of transition. Thank you in advance

Hey, Slodoc!
Welcome! :wavehand:
Are you planning on putting your new upgrade in a different spot or where your existing tank (soon to be obsolete) one is?
You're going to need a bigger sump for a 55-60. For sure.
The most efficient way to transition?
Visit Bulk Reef''s website. They have some great RIMLESS tank setup kits that are pretty reasonable, actually!

Here's one in your size range:

Set it up to their directions, take your time - cycle it thoroughly then SLOWLY add your inhabitants one or two at a time per week to your NEW SYSTEM.

KEEP your 20 gallon as your QUARANTINE tank! Obviously, don't put ANY new arrivals in your new 55-60 gal display without quarantining them first!

Good Luck! Please post again!

I would use the 20g as a sump for the new 55-60g. Run a skimmer in it and don't forget powerheads on both ends of the new tank, I would position one facing upwards fairly close to the top and the other straight on close to the bottom if you only use two. Also, get some carbon running either from a good hob filter or in a carbon reactor. Just my two cents.

I appreciate the responses. Would you recommend seeding the new substrate with the substrate from the existing tank to speed up the process or just do a full new cycle for the new display tank? Thank you!

Do a full cycle in the new DT with bacteria- Bio Spira is good!
As far as the substrate goes - get the good stuff: TROPIC EDEN!
