New MJ 1200

FWIW
I have ordered a three of these in the past . Today I received another and to my surprise, it came in a different box. They used to come in a light blue color box if I remember correctly. It looks like they have updated the design slightly and included a prop designed specifically for tank flow. The last MJ1200 I ordered (1 month ago) did not include these parts. The new box boasts 1300GPH in "Circulation Pump Mode" and 295GPH in "Power Head Mode".

I do not recall ever receiving these parts on my previous orders.

That's definitely the new design. I had read recently on a popular reef product blog that they just redesigned the pump, but I didn't think it would be sold for a few months. I'd be interested to hear your comments on the new "improvements".

Well, I wont be using it for anything besides mixing salt, so I really wont have much to say. I'll play with it in the brute container so see what it's all about though. Maybe the power head assembly will prove to be a more effective mixing setup than my normal "convenient store fruit punch" mixing method.

That's a great move in their part to keep up with all the improvements that have come to the world of powerheads. Did the price change with the additional parts?

The price was the same as when I bought it a month ago. I think it was $24 @ BRS or something along those lines. I've seen them cheaper, but I'm hooked on the points...

There are three separate cups. They hold exceptionally well to the side of a brute container. I still prefer magnets, but do not see these falling off the glass without a good knock of the arm or a rock falling. They are a little deeper of a cup than the old style Maxi Jet.

Here is the assembly in powerhead configuration. I think it looks nice.

Here is a picture of the flow. At 5" below water level, it creates a pretty size vortex. It's hard to take a picture of flow, but I'm certainly impressed with the addition. It moves the water a whole lot more than just the pump by itself in circulation configuration. I can't gauge how wide the spread is in a 22 gallon brute, but don't mind trying it in my main tank of someone is interested.

It does give off a slight humming noise.

They did the change suddenly, but I like the idea. It's easy to change up and the cost is pretty much the same. I'm impressed they decided to step it up and make some sort of hybrid pump.

I think they caught on to the Sure Flow 1600 mod that a lot of people are using on their pump and figured it would be a great selling point to include both the pump and a prop for the same price. I've never tried the mod - but would love to see a comparison between the two.

P.S. - The pivoting arm that is on the kit is a whole lot stronger than that of a Koralia - which I have had numerous issues with them snapping.
