New Oceanic 58 Reef Ready

I wanted to give everyone a heads up on my current plans:

My plans for equipment right now are as follows.... (any recommendations would be appreciated)

Lighting:
Tek T-5 36"x6 - I gave into the T-5 system after speaking with a few people that had the same tank.

Filtration:
Sump - AGA 20L (currently trying to design the setup)
Return Pump - Eheim 1250
CaribSea Seaflor Super Reef Sand
CaribSea Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand
Tonga Live Rock
Marshall Island Live Rock

Heat:
Redundant Jager 150 Watt, in sump

Skimmer:
EuroReef RS80, in sump

Powerheads:
Tunze Nano 6025 x 2

I have everything either in hand, or on order. My tank should be here in a couple days.

ILighting:
Current Orbit HP 36" (4 x 96W) - My LFS keeps pushing this, and I am trying to avoid any heat issues.

STAY AWAY.

Pcs are the least efficient lighting technology used in reef tanks at this point. That means more heat per watt (and less light) than anything else.

If you dont want to go MH, use T5. Just dont waste your time and money on PCs. If you do go T5, stay away from the Teks. They're awful. Crappy ballasts, and no active cooling. The Aquactinics fixtures are much nicer.

From what I've read the Tek T5 retro systems are hard to beat. My buddy has a couple in his tank and he loves them.

Other than the poor reflectors, the poor ballasts, and the lack of cooling, yeah, theyre pretty hard to beat.

Buy yourself icecap reflectors, some OSRAM ballasts, and get soem fans.

Sound like a really nice setup man. Post some pics later.

I bought the same setup, but I got taken on the sump:rolleyes:. Do not get the Oceanic sump, it's a waste of money. I believe it was $140.00 and it's just a 20 gallon glass tank with a baffle.

If I had to do it over, I would have had someone build me one, a larger one at that.

I'd post a pic, but I have a sand storm again because I keep moving my rock around:D .

I believe you'll need a larger heater. I have the Jager 250 watt.

I've got a fairly similar setup. It is a 65 tall. Same footprint but a few inches taller. Anyway I have 2x6025, and the RS-80. I would definitely give both two thumbs up.

I upgraded from a 40 breeder on which I had the Nova Extreme that has the 1 reflector. When I had it on my 40 BR some mushrooms I had would never fully expand and the one that did was well shaded under rocks.

I planned to go with the Aquactinics fixture myself but placed the Nova directly on the tank for now. It was about ~4" above the tank before on shelf brackets i installed. So it really is about a 4" difference although the water would disperse more than just saying that. I really don't know if I will upgrade it immediately unless I notice the corals not responding well to it. The mushrooms are now about 4" lower from the light and growing much faster. My hammer is also about 4" lower and is more fully expanded. My leather is well, I have sps w/ great polyp extension as well (at the top, well upper 1/3).

I absolutely think that the tek or aquatinics would be better. Especially for the SPS. I still think the Nova is better than PC. Since my tank is in a closet facing out into my foyer the design of the aquactinics fixture would more suit my needs w/ the fan. I really didn't see the need for 6 bulbs. 5 would be perfect. I have no doubt I will change them.

Eventually.

I have a 59rr and love it. I'm only using 1 250 watt pfo 14K bulb for lighting. I dont have any issues with keeping softies, lps, or sps's. You dont have to go overboard for lighting. I dont run a canopy (open top), my tank runs during the day at 80 degrees and the heater only comes on at night. Plain jane Amiracle sump (24x12x14). For a skimmer I have a Aqua C Remora hanging off the side of the sump. I saw that you were going to use a 150 watt heater, that more than likely to small (unless you live in the tropics :) ). I wouldnt use anything less than a 250. I'll try and get a pic of my setup and show you.

To cliarify, I will be using redundant 150 watt heaters (aka 2 of them). This will provide more heating area, and most importantly will protect from the possibility of loosing all heating if one breaks down. One 150 watt will be better then no 250 watt, in the event of a failure.

Hey Schmidsa,

I am kind of late chiming in but I will give you my 2 cents anyway. I have had my Oceanic 58 for about 16 years. (yes you read that right). On my 58 I have a hamilton hood 250W MH with two 54W PC's. I keep eggcrate on the top of tank instead of glass for gas exchange and to keep the fairy wrasses in. It has a corner overflow with a durso standpipe.

For your sump go large as you can, I think my sump was made out of a 30 long aquarium. I use a MAG 7 for return attached to a Sea Swirl. I use a Euro Reef skimmer (can't go wrong with a Euro) and have a SEIO 820 in the tank for additional flow.

My only advice is that I would go MH with supplemental lighting(VHO,PC's, T-5's etc.) just because someday you are going to get the bug to have SPS or clams. I know T-5's are the latest and greatest but I still like the shimmer lines that the MH's add to your tank. I am probably shutting my 58 down this fall to finally make room for a in wall 180G that I have been wanting to set up forever. Good Luck!

how do you like your 65 gallon spmedi? and is it All Glass?

Don't want to hi-jack Schmidsa thread here...but I love by 65. I'm limited on length since I put my tank in a spare closet under by L-shaped stairs facing out into my foyer. The 65 is the perfect tank for my setup. It is a perfecto tank. I'll send you more info in a pm so we can get back to Schmidsa reef.

Schmidsa I would definitely look at the nanostream mod someone posted here. It shows cutting off the inside "restricting" tube on the nano front cover. It is a HUGE improvement. I actually used to have both nanostreams and a mj900 in my tank. After the mod i had to take the mj900 out and play w/ the nanos to get the flow right so my corals weren't going crazy. It is great now.

I used to have a closed loop melev style ran by a mag9 and I didn't really care for all the pvc. Plus it was 93w and was only pushing water similar to 1 nanostream which is 7w. I put the mag9 on my return but restrict it with a ball valve a little bit as it was just to much turn over through my sump.

Update

Update

Update:

So I received my 90 lbs. of live rock on Friday and started the curing in a rubbermaid container. I plumbed the tank on Saturday and wet tested it Saturday night.

Based upon this, I think the Eheim pump is awesome, but the 1250 is way underpowered, in addition, the 3/8" output fitting on it should be against the law, since finding any fittings for it locally is almost impossible. Everything is doing well, but I think I will be replacing it with the 1260.

I now have 90 lbs. of scrubbed live rock in the tank cycling.

My Euro-Reef RS80 is not the quietest skimmer I have ever heard, I am going to put something under the sump and under the skimmer to try to quiet it down, but any advise on this would be appreciated.

My only other issue is my Jager 150 heaters are just slightly too long to lay down in my 20 L sump. I am considering replacing them with 2 RENA Excel 150's.... which will theoretically fit laying down.

I also made the final decision on purchasing a Neptune AquaController III. I was planning on buying timers and a top off, etc., and I figured I might as well bite the bullet early and not waste the money on anything else. In addition, I don't have a ton of room under my tank, so this will hopefully limit the number of electrical devices down there, and clean up the stand a little bit.

I am getting my T5's this week.....

Thanks for the post about the pump. My 58 RR should be in soon and I have been debating between the 1250 and 1260. Did you get your lights? Any pictures?

I have also just purchased a 58 RR with a corner overflo. It came with a perforated drain pipe with a sponge , will this be noisy as a toilet and should I replace this with a Durso ..

Actually I bought it from a guy who bought it last summer and never set it up.Came with a Cherry Oak Oceanic stand...just what I was looking for...was bought at Pets of New Hyde Park on Long Island

It has been a while, and the tank is up and running, so I thought I would post some pics. I have been battling algae still, but the water quality is great.

I have yet to put stuff where it will belong, cause I just got a bunch of stuff from a frag swap, and a friends tank had a light fixture fall into it, so I am babysitting some of his corals.
