New Octopus skimmer?

I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will take this new skimmer to start producing. It has been 3 days now and I have nothing in the cup. It is a PS150. Its foaming well just no production. Chould it be that there is nothing in the water to pull out?

The tank is 31/2 months old now and everything seems to be doing good. Should I not worry about it and just let the tank run?

I'm going to tag along on this post as I'm curious to hear what others have to say as well.

Of course, I'll also share my experience. I setup a 65 gallon tank back in February and installed an Octopus NW200. I wanted to keep SPS and also wanted to stock a bit on the heavy side, so I figured the extra skimming capacity would be good.

At this point, I've had the system running for a month and a half. I have two Clark Clowns, a Lawnmower Blenny, and a Foxface in the tank now (trying to give you an idea as to bioload). Generally speaking, the skimmer foams up nicely, but takes an extremely long time to fill the collection cup. In fact, I can go a week or so and might only get an inch of skimmate in the cup. I've tried to dial it in so that it skims more wet, but then I end up overflowing the collection cup. Where it is set now seems to work the best. I attribute the lack of skimmate to clean water. My nitrates and phosphates both read 0 using both Seachem and API test kits.

Also, I feed my corals with Coral Frenzy once or twice per week. I turn the skimmer off, mix 1/4 teaspoon or so with some tank water, and dump it in next to a power head. 30 minutes to an hour later I turn the skimmer back on. At this point, my skimmer produces quite a bit of skimmate for a while before settling back down. This makes sense as there is something in the water to skim out. It also reinforces my belief that the lack of skimmate at all other times is due to clean water.

Let's see if someone else that's had one of these babies for more than a few months has a different opinion.

It seems that the skimmer will do a very good job it is very aggressive. I am wondering the same thing. Is it just clean water?
Its been up for 3 days and I have got nothing yet. I had a nitrate proble in witch I fixed. I also did two large water changes so the water is very clean. I am wondering the same thing you are. I have herd nothing but good about them and it really cranks up the water.

It has been about 3 week since I added the Octopus PS150 Needle Wheel skimmer. I wanted to let everyone know its working great. I love it. It took a week or two to get adjustments right but it is ripping now.

So, what are you getting as far as skimmate? I've now had mine up since early February. I don't get tons of skimmate, but my nitrates and phosphates are undetectable. Corals are happy, fish are happy, I am happy! Just find it strange I'm not pulling more actual "gunk" out of my water. Maybe 1 cup (as in 8 fl ounces) a week is it.

I may empty 1 time a week. It will be full in 7 days. I change water
(15 gal) every week. It slows down until mid week then its full again. I do not clean the top neck in the cup and it seems to do a much better job. I'm happy, and so is everybody else. Great purchase.

Interesting. Are you skimming a bit on the wet side?

sounds like you had the same experience i did mike....took my octopus about a month to fully break in and it's been producing a consistant dry skimmate since.

No as a mater of fact I moded the adjustment tube to go even dryer and its trucking right along. I have moved it down now below the level it was built with buy a 1/8 of an inch and it keeps getting better and better. The lower I go the darker the skimmate!!
