is this the best place to put it i could put it on a rock but i read they like the sand anything would be helpful

nice looking brain.

Everything I've read says its best to put them on the sand. This is because they expand so much during the day. When this happens the flesh one the bottom edge of the brain rubs against the substrate and while sand will move a rock could tear or rub the flesh raw. So its simplest to just put it on the sand.

Also you want enough flow keep sand off the brain.

You didn't ask about feeding but its pretty simple. After dark tentacles will come out around the mouth, along the border of the green and red on your coral. I like to feed mine minced up shrimp with a turkey baster. Other use mysid shrimp.

As for what to look for to know if its doing ok. It should inflate during the day to increase surface area and put out tentacles at night. Keep an eye out for tissue recession around the bottom edge where it touches the substrate.

I agree. They should deffinately expand alot during the day. I have a green open brain that would not expand at all until I put him in a somewhat more shady spot of the tank. Now it triples in size daily. I'm not sure of the lighting requirments of the red open brains. I do know this---Don't let sand sit on the edge of its soft tissue. I have one that got partially covered from a sand sifter. I let it go a few days thinking the coral should be able to take care of itself. After 3 days I finally reached in and shook it off, and to my dismay there was a big piece of tissue missing. It has since somewhat healed, but you can still see where I messed up on him.
