New picture of my clam tank

Peter didn't answer one question, so I'll chime in. I met the young man that built/welded those stands. It was made of 2" square tubing, and extremely strong looking.

I was also looking to buy one of these tanks/stand/light. Joy was asking $2200 for one, but I've no idea what Peter paid. If he wants to share, that is up to him. What I loved most was the acrylic tank was made of 1" material, with no rim along the top. It was just nice and wide open.

The guy that welded the stand incorporated a good looking arm that comes up and over the tank, allowing the Aquaspacelight to hang from it. He told me the stands went for $550 each. Now, nobody ask me more about how to contact him, because I don't even know his name. We were just standing there and happened to strike up a conversation, and that is how I found out he was the guy that made those cool stands. They were painted with black paint.

The tank has one overflow box at the end. And Susan, Peter has a couple of seaswirls on there, and recently added the SCWD wavemaker as well.

Matter of fact Peter, you need to tell me when it would be a good time to come over so I can check it all out!

Marc

I'm uploading a picture I took today - on the right is T. gigas - the other two are T. crocea.

My website is down due to bandwidth exceeded. So I cannot upload picture by referencing it as a link.
It's several steps to process pictures - reducing from 2272x1704 to 640x480 - to post here.

You can barely see Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus) on the left.

Hi Marc -

I'm working with Brad to have a meeting at my place - probably in March - but you are welcome to visit if you let me know in advance.

To all -

Here is a picture of some equipment under tank. I'm using Calcium reactor as well as Nielson reactor (which works out better for me in keeping the PH high). My CO2 is empty - so it is removed - if I can only figure out where to get it refilled. In the meantime Calcium level is at 410 the last that I check.

I'm just using a 30 g glass tank for sump. You cannot see the refugium (light is off) and storage (fresh water) tank on the other side. I'm running a Euro Reef CS8-2 skimmer that seem to work well.

That is a perfect tank for clams. I looked at it at the show and it is really easy to see the clams from above and show them off. It would be nice to have a tank like that, but the problem is money and space.

Check any welding supply stores. They should be able to get you a Co2 refill.

Thanks electric130.

Not at the moment. I was going to put together a site that describe more of my tank dedicated to clams. But it's almost spring and I'm busy with orchids again.

It gets frustrating sometimes with reef keeping. I still don't know what's in the water that stress clams. I know it does not help when I keep so many of them. I thought better equipment would make up to provide better culture.

At the moment, only crocea clams are showing stress - but other clams Maxima, gigas, Deresa - are doing okay. Here is a photo fo my gigas that show new growth.

I'm confused. Clams sure are pretty though.

Here is a group of happy maxima, good mantle expansion. Sorry about the lighting - but I don't move the clams when I take photos of them. I also don't use flash

Sad looking crocea

Sad looking crocea

IN the same tank with 40 clams - my crocea are sad for whatever reason. My water parameter is okay. The only think I suspect is that my Nirtrate is not detectable. I was questioning if my Salifert NO3 test kit maybe bad. Well, I did test 2 ppm using it in my other fish tank.

Here is a shot of my crocea - emitting threads of bubble - mucus - whatever it is. It shows irritation from whatever is in the water. Whatever I cannot see.

I lost 1 crocea and 1 maxima. Don't know why. I finally dipped all crocea in fresh water. They look good after dip. But when I clean my tank - they start this mucus again.

I am wondering if there may be some bacteria - that maybe when I disturb the water - clams get weaken and become vulnerable?? But why do I see recovering - or no event to other clams house in the same tank?

Group shot of crocea

Here is a photo of crocea. They look good - but not as good compared to when I first received them. Also, they were just dipped in fresh water yesterday - because I finally decided that I need to do something.

Here is a shot of Maxima that recovered nicely. This I believe is a wild clam that I got from Flying Fish. I lost several of the wild clams. They did not survive when I dip them in fresh water.
This one shown below - I thought I would loose him from all the fresh water dip and whatever I have in my tank. It is doing good when all other crocea are dying slowly. Is this because crocea are more difficult to keep? I don't know.

Note the one on the right - it is not doing well. But the one in the middle - it is doing better everyday. I mean - it's mantle is expanding more as day goes.

i love the colors on the last pic. i want to keep clams so bad, but i'm going to wait awhile and do some reading/research/learning first. i tried one about 6 months ago because my LFS told me i could keep a 3" crocea under VHOs. needless to say i didn't know any better and of course, he died. now i have MHs, but i'm not jumping back in yet. gotta learn more first. they are beautiful animals and i don't want to kill anymore.

Yes Marc - I feed my clams home grown phyto - I cultivate it using DT's. I also dose KORALvit F.

I dont' dose alot though...don't want big algae bloom in my tank.

But something went wrong with my tank 3 weeks ago. I lost 2 table acros - and I lost alot of plants in my refugium.

I know you don't want too much algae, but from what I've been told, feeding phyto actually reduces the growth of algae on the glass. It feeds the detrivores and of course it would really feed your clams.

That's a 150g right? Plus a 30 gal 'fuge? You'd need to feed quite a bit every other day to keep everyone fat-n-happy. Like 12 tbsp every other day. It's a good thing you are growing your own.

Man, I can't believe you lost two tables! That is the one coral I really want badly. You better give me your gorgeous orange m. cap. before it gets in trouble! :D

I am sorry to bring news of the apocalypse, but it is coming, give it time.

Good Luck. I hope you beat it.:reading:
