New Potters Angel

Well i finally bit the bullet and put a Potters in my reef tank. My LFS had about 5 of them and i'de been watching the smallest of them for about a month now to see how it was doing. It was eating frozen and seemed to be behaving itself around corals.(they had him in one of their reef tanks to give it a better chance at survival when it came into the store) Finally yesterday i decided to bring him home. Its just about 2" long so i'm guessing its pretty young, hopefully i can keep him for a long time. It already ate for me and it hasn't even been in the tank 24 hours. My Chevron tang hates him though and was abusing it for the first hour it was in the tank. I had to shut the lights off yesterday, but today they seem to be ok. Here's a couple pics. I had to use the flash to get a clear pic because he won't stop moving so the colors aren't terrific. Notice the ricordea in the one pic for a size reference.

Wow...he is small. Best of luck to you with your new fish. I love potters, I wish I could add one to my reef. But Im already pushing my luck with one coral beauty and one flame angel...knock on wood. They both behave around my corals and each other. Occassionally the coral beauty will chase the flame in a short burst, but this last about 1 sec and the two of them continue to roam around the tank.

It has a lot of blue for 2". unusual :) i have had a few the size of quarters. very cool at that size!

good luck with it! hope it does well for you.

I was thinking the same thing about all the blue. Mine has very little blue, and it is about 3". It will be interesting to see if yours keeps or loses that as it matures. Keep us posted.

Is it out of the ordinary for them to have that much blue. I know that there has been one or two completely blue ones collected and that is obviously extremely rare, but i just thought other than that they were blue and orange and some had more than others. i was actually hoping it gets a little more orange on it because i like the contrast in color, but if more blue is a more desirable trait in these guys i hope he stays this way.

As far as I know, apart from the totally blue ones you mention which are rare and thus valuable for that reason, I don't think that more blue versus more orange is necessarily more desirable per se. I think that it is just a matter of preference. I like both.

Great find. I have had my potters for just over a year now. One of my favorite fish! He was about 2" when I got him and has grown about an inch. He has never touched any of my corals, sps, lps, rics, zoas.

Hope he does well for you.

Mine was eating frozen food when I got him, mostly mysis and brine. But he eats everything now, pellet, frozen, flake.

I guess that's not much help.

To give potter's the best chance of survival you need an established tank with live rock and algae growing on the rocks and glass. Some will eat prepared foods right away, but others will not and those need to be able to browse like they did in the ocean.

I don't QT any of my fish. My lfs is very good and gets livestock thats in tip top shape. Also they QT them in hospital tank in the store for days before they r put out for sale so that fish showing signs of illness don't get put out until they r healthy. I have never had a fish from this particular store die on me as a result of illness or starvation. Lost one to jumping however several months back. He's doing great, being more bold when the tang tries to bully him and spends most of his time out in the open swimming around and grazing. Also eats everything i put in the tank, mysis, planktin, blood worms, emerald entrees, and nori so far, but i'm sure when i feed something else he'll eat that too.

Just a little update. He ate pellets for me last night. I still haven't found a food that he won't eat and he still hasn't touched any corals. Keeping my fingers crossed for now but i think i got a good one.

yes i did. he's the smallest one they had. i was keeping an eye on all of them for the past few weeks and he was the best behaved around corals. As far as i know all the ones still at the store are eating frozen also, but they r larger.
