New Pump for a 120gal

Hey everyone,

I had a power surge last night and my Quietone 3000 return pump seems to studder when trying to turn it back on.

It's been running straight for practically 2 years now so I think it may be time for a new pump. I'm not comfortable with the pump not being able to turn on properly when powered off.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable pump that does about 800gph? Quiet pump preferred.

Shortlist:
Mag9.5
another Quietone 3000
Eheim 1262

Main problem is I need to get one ASAP so I'd prefer a normally stocked product if possible.

Thanks!

Restart problems are a common complaint with QO pumps. I would get an Eheim. the 1262 will have quite a bit more flow than what you have now. A 1260 would be closer.

Thanks Scott,

I was leaning towards the Eheims as I see plenty of good reviews online...

My main question is, are they worth double the price over the Mags? I've never owned a Mag pump so input is appreciated.

i have been using my mag 9.5 for over 5 years now and never had a problem with it.

I can't even hear the pump running but it will help if you put some vinyl tubing on the output then you can hard plumb it the rest of the way. helps keep vibration noice silent

I would use a Mag over a QO, but an Eheim over a Mag. In that brand, the 9.5 is a decent pump, but the Eheim is nicer. The volute design is a lot better and easier to service. The Eheim is quieter. There are people who have had Eheims running for 20+ years.

That's actually how I have my pump now. Vinyl tubing helps a lot!

Wow, that's awesome... I guess it comes down to what the store has in stock when I go later today.

Thanks!

Ended up biting the bullet and getting the Eheim 1262.

Any recommendations on whether to run it with the foam pad or removing it and adding the 3/4" barb fitting?

Another tip: Dont use the output fitting it comes with. It is a metric barb size. If you want to use PVC, use a sched 80 (not 40) 3/4" MPT adapter. Wrap it up good with Teflon tape. If you are going to use vinyl hose, use a 3/4" barb fitting.

Already changed it ;)

I had an extra 3/4" threaded barb fitting and I used some teflon tape.

Worked like a charm with the exact plumbing I have. Although the power is much more than my old one. I had to restrict it a little with my ball valve. It almost blew water out of my tank!

Yeah, the Eheim pumps handle head better than others and put out more real world GPH than similarly rated pumps. Glad it worked out for you.

Wow, I really had to dial back my ball valve on the return pump.

This morning my tank sounded like a washing machine because my overflows couldn't handle the extra flow.

Any ideas on how I can increase capacity on m overlfows? I have a 2.5" durso style system.

Maybe putting a "T" on the end of the pipe in the sump will help more air get in?

I'm just so surprised how much more power it is... My Quietone 3000 was "rated" for 780gph... this one is 900 but it's definitely more than doubling the flow of my other pump.
