New red starfish desolving/dying?

Science and Honor!
So I bought a red starfish yesterday and it was ok the whole day but then this morning I checked and it was dessolving or falling appart. Is there a reason why this is happenning? I have one fire goby and a turbo snail idk if they would be able to attack or eat the starfish

most stars need to be slow drip aclimated for 4-6 hours. And even then they dont do really great in most tanks.

Ughhh

Ughhh

I acclimated it it by drippin for about 30 to 45 mins then put it i realized there was a spike in my ph it was bad I did a water change and used some ph buffer checked salinity about 4 times and it was 1.024 but I believe my ph destroyed it but I'm wondering now I used I think it was a Kent product to clean live rock for imediate use and idk if that cud have caused the ph spike

Most the guys I know and listen too recommend waiting at least 6 months after a tank is set up and fully cycled before doing a star fish. Takes a tank a long time for the micro fauna to grown enough to sustain a star. Also they recemend a minimum of a 75 gallon tank for a single star.

And a 30-45 minute drip isnt near enough. That would kill the star. Also dont use any buffer unless your alk is low. Thats all most buffers raise.

I dont think you understand. The short acclimation very well could have killed it as well.

And buffer is for raising alk. you need to test your alk to see what it is to determine whether the buffer is needed.

Also I would never clean live rock then throw it in a tank. either throw a very small amount in a existing system or cook it separately. If the tank had no live rock in it and this is a new set-up, you should not be putting any livestock in it yet and no stars for a very long time.

Starfish require the longest, most careful acclimation of anything. If you rush it they do exactly what yours did....disolve.

A starfish needs a very well established tank....NOT 6 months as mentioned above, BUT years...like 4/5 years.

Stars eat the crap off of the rocks, It takes a few years to get enough stuff down in the rock to keep a star alive...it will starve to death.

The 2nd thing is that Stars do NOT do well with parameter changes. If the water temp changes...or the salinity changes....or any other parameter change......He may not make it.

Stars are awesome.......but not easy to keep

damn

damn

thats all i can say is damn well it wasnt an expensive starfish but the part taht worries me this morning i went to checkout if it decided to call it quits and i couldnt find the damn thing and a did star fish some where in my pouros rock doesnt sound like a good thing...

would like to know why my red startfish died

would like to know why my red startfish died

Hi, new to the hobby and new to the forum site.
I bought a red starfish as part of my second wave of clean up crew after cycling my tank for 6 weeks and introducing shrimps and snails at week 4.
All parameters are good and starfish was very active for one week, now it has sadly died. It looked very lack-lustre last night and I took it out this morning and it pretty much disintegrated in my hands. All other inhabitants are happy.
My set-up is a Juwel 125l with standard filter and no protein skimmer.
I'm keen to know 2 things;
1. why this happened?
2. am I still ok to get a pair of clowns in a few days time?
Thanks in advance for any advice
Martyn

Probably starved to death. Check ammonia/nitrite levels in the tank before adding more specimens as well as temperature
